This could possibly be a retarted question but ill ask anyway cause i have never seen it before. Recently at my place in East texas i have been finding mass amounts of Coyote Scat that seems to be made up of mostly grain and corn. Seems to be mainly a legume or bean pod possibly, but occasional piles contain corn. Anybody ever seen this before? I could understand maybe if there was a shortage of rabbits, skunks, etc.., but rodents and marsupials are everywhere on my lease. Any ideas on why they are eating this??

Coyotes are omnivorous and eat just about anything that doesn't eat them first. They are particularly fond of persimmons when in season.

I have a pair that lives near me and one injured his foot. He survived quite well off of range cubes out of my barn until it healed.

I have one that hits my feeder every night right now. He's about to get lead poisoning too...

I've caught a few on my game cam eating corn also. I think they take whatever they can get.

They will wreak havoc on a watermelon patch too.

Hogs are carnivores by both classification (Order Carnivora) and primary diet. However, they are not obligate carnivores which is were cats tend to fall and snakes.

Being a carnivore isn't usually an all or none proposition for most carnivores. After obligate carnivores that get virtually their entire diet from animal products, you have hypercarnivores with diets that consist of more than 70% animal product, mesocarnivore 50-70%, and that of a hypocarnivore less than 30%.

Similarly, you get plant eating animals that consume meat or other animal tissue such as squirrels, deer, goats, pigs, etc.

Hogs are in the Artiodactyla Order, the same as deer. But just a few hogs can dang sure eat a deer up in an short time. I've seen it happen more than once.

I think you meant Coyotes instead of hogs. Now coyotes are in the Carnivora Order, but by calling them omnivores I was refering to their actual diet, not their taxonomical classification.

D'uh. I miswrote. The discussion, obviously is of coyotes, not hogs. I will fix that.

Okay, apparently you can edit posts. So here is the correction.

I'd say yotes are without a doubt opportunists. Seen some that have been frequenting a dying trailer park area that has a huge population of feral cats. Saw one a while back crossing a major road with a cat in his mouth!

I think they take the dog's maxim to a hyper position, eat first, decide if you need to throw it up later.
