I didn't want to hijack another thread. Someone show me that they are different breeds.

Information About Pointers
The first important fact to clarify about Pointers is their name. The American Kennel Club just calls them Pointers. But, some people also call them English Pointers or American Field Pointers. They are all the same breed. But, they are not the same as German Shorthaired Pointers, which are much more popular and are very different in personality and slightly different in looks. Pointers typically come in 4 colors: Black and White, Liver and White (a fancy way of saying brown and white), Orange and White (which means they are orange/beige/red and have a black nose), and Lemon and White (which means they are orange/beige/red and have a pink nose). German Shorthaired Pointers come in only Liver and White or Liver Roan (which means they are mostly brown). The easiest way to tell is that Pointers get to keep their tails, and German Shorthaired Pointers get their tails docked (cut short) when they are puppies in most cases. And Pointers are not hounds or hounddogs! They are birddogs. But, more than that, they are wonderful pets.

A average English pointer and German Shorthair Pointer have very different personalitys you would have a favorite if you were around each breed long enough. That being said there are always exceptions

not sure of the exact point you are trying to make, but i think I understand what you are saying to be this:

English Pointer/Pointer/American Pointer are considered all the same "breed", although their bloodlines could vary greatly. agreed.

German Shorthaired Pointers are not the same "breed" as the above described pointers as they have a different breed makeup that created the GSP breed. i.e. Spanish pointer, german pointer, german scent and tracking hounds like the bloodhound, and the "english pointer" (x of the spanish and italian pointer).agreed

Same breed? I guess but since the late 1800’s the pointer has been evolving into the animal we hunt over today. When folks first started bragging on their dogs and started having field trials to prove who’s was the all around best they began to bred the best to the best. The male side of almost all the dogs we hunt over and field trial come from one dog, Rip Rap (the start of registration efforts). So from there to today folks have inbred, line bred, and out crossed trying to produce the fastest, most stylish animal, and a dog with stamina and high inherent bird IQ. As well as tail carriage, color etc. They have done that and the resulting animal has little resemblance to English and Spanish pointers etc. except the general outward appearance.

I know where you stand on this as I remember going round and round with you about this topic a year or two ago. But I’ll still go with American Field and call them pointers because I believe they're very different.

Well, I beg to differ..English Pointers descinded from Spanish
Pointers crossed with Walker Hounds...Most German Dogs GSP/s
or DD's have French Blue Gascon Hound in them...also they have
Black and White and Solid Black GSP's...

Also, most GSP's probably have some English Pointer in them, at
least over here, cause they sure got a lot of white on them in
my lifetime... AKC doesn't like Black & White GSP's...but there
is a line of them in Germany and now over here...and they hunt
just as well...no one told them the diff...Don Dial..Pipe Cree

The point I am making is that the name Pointer or English Pointer is the same breed. "Pointer" is the official name.
The names are interchangeable.

Tigger has a thread about 5 free Pointers. When you click on the link, they are called English Pointers.

Texas Trailrider is called both names on different web sites.

They are not different.

Shorthairs have nothing to do with this arguement.

Oh yeah, if we are discussing English pointers bred for the show ring vs. pointers bred for the field, I'd say there is quite a bit of difference.
My ole hunting partner once exclaimed as we watch two show type pointers clamber out of the back of an expensive SUV. "What the he** are those durned things?"
They had been lounging in air conditioned comfort all afternoon as they waited their turns to run in a junior hunt test.
Then again, the city folk in attendance may well have made the same remarks about those odd looking brush country boys and their dogs....but we drove away with a handful of ribbons.
