A few guys I know were hunting Saturday on a big lake here in north Texas and were checked by the game warden. There are several small lakes, read very small, that are within an hour of this big lake that are extremely well kept public secrets. One of which I've been hunting almost exclusively with only 2 other groups of guys who I don't know. I haven't even told the group of guys about these lakes that I mentioned earlier. Pretty much the gw went as far to write down the lakes and draw the guys a map. They aren't the type to keep things hush hush either. I guess lake naming can still be a problem even if you aren't on the internet! hammer

Of course, that's why people say talk to your game wardens to get information, we always pick their brains for information and numbers when we get checked. They can tell you were and what kind of ducks are killed, great resource.

I had some flooded stuff on a WMA I hunted by myself all the sudden it was like someone drew a map to it. I asked the biologist how word got out. "Game Warden told everyone"
I said what?
He said he don't duck hunt he would check people all over the place no birds. People small talk him ask where the ducks are at. Over here flooded woods by the creek..

WOW

Yeah, they are very loose lipped when it comes to bird locations.

Would you expect a game warden to keep that kind of information to themselves? Did you really think they were wel kept public secrets?

I have gotten some great tips from the GW's. Gotta love 'em. When you think about it from their perspective, it's public property, a public resource and a public audience. There's no reason for secrecy, from their perspective.

I had a similar experience when I called a GW to clear up a concern I had on hunting a river. Pretty much gave me coordinates to a lake 75 miles away where they were blasting woodies. But I never went cause thats not how I roll.

My first ever duck hunt, GW checked me, then let me follow him on his rounds to show me spots...

The first time a GW checked me I was catfishing on a little lake outside of CS. He pulled up and checked my license and everything else, then asked to see my stringer. I pulled it up with 2 hands and the look on his face when he saw some of the blues I had was priceless. Next thing you know he's giving me his cell number and we made plans to go out a few days later. I picked him up and we caught more fish and a few that were bigger. He's also taken me hog hunting on a few places since then and we've done well.

He doesn't even check me at the lake anymore. If anything he just comes to by to talk.

Same thing happen last year one of my top public spots we setup about 4am, in came a boat about 4:30 they setup right ontop of us!! Right after LST they come around and it's the GWs!! They checked us, and the other group hunting there. Ever since that day I've seen 5-7 groups in a spot that really only holds 2 groups.

Another reason why "your spot" is never "your spot" better have some back up spots!!

I'm not mad about it. I know several of the game wardens in the area around here and they're duck hunters too, but I highly doubt they would name one of the lakes because they do hunt it, actually how I found out about two of the three...but they swore me to secrecy. I'm pretty sure this other GW is fairly new, or doesn't duck hunt.

I just find it humorous that everyone makes such a big deal about lake naming, when it reality on here someone might name a lake, and others, including the GW are out giving out coordinates to the X.

I highly doubt the traffic on these little lakes is actually going to increase. None of them are "walk-in" friendly, and two of them the ramps are closed and you have to have the cojones to launch down a very steep hill into the mud to use a boat or have a yak.

I bet the TP&W office will have a flood of incoming calling inquiring about hot duck hunting spots!

I do not think I would worry about the GW telling a few people that are already in the area, that's much different than someone posting on a forum were 1000's of people will see.
