Opening morning before day light I had this Boar come into what I call my lower feeder about 6:45am. I had no intention of shooting a pig opening morning but after 2 of my shooter bucks tried to come in and he ran them off I decided that one hour of him sucking down my corn like a Hoover was more than enough. So I picked up the 300 RUM and droped the hammer on him at about 7:45am. I saw him kinda studder step to the side and then he was gone. Then I looked back at the 2 shooter bucks and they acted like I never even shot. Little later those 2 bucks tried to come back to the feeder but when they got real close they once again shyed away from it. That’s when I figured that the pig had probably crashed just out of sight. So about 9:30 I climbed down from the stand and walked towards the feeder. Sure enough the hog had only gone about 20’ before crashing behind a cedar bush. He aint as big as the one I killed 2 weeks before (and he didn’t come back to life either grin) but he should make plenty of breakfast sausage. food

Second day one of the other guys killed what we nick named the G3 buck. This deer got his name because he always had a habit of busting off his G3 before anyone could get a crack at him. The buck was 6.5 years old. I really enjoyed watching this deer grow from a nice 3.5 year old to a very nice 6.5 year old. He actually had his best rack last year at 5.5 years old but I am sure the severe drought had something to do with the decline this year. He was also showing signs of a split on his G2 which he had never shown before.

No deer camp would be complete without some fine dining. Here we have Mesquite smoked Elk jalepeno summer sausage courtesy of Kmon1. This stuff was outstanding!!!!!!!!! Thanks Kmon!

Day 6 I shot this 10 point. He is a deer I nick named “Patch” due to his white patch of hair on top of his shoulders. This is the third season I have seen this deer and he has always been a clean 10 and I told him the first time I saw him I was going to kill him some day……..I made good on that promise almost 2 years later. I actually watched this deer all week before deciding to take him. I figured since there were so many shots near by and several of the better bucks stoped showing up then they must have caught bullets from other hunters and Patch was probably next to go down so it might as well be me to do the honors. Usually every deer I kill has ground shrinkage but this time he was just what I expected, however the size of his body did surprise me a bit. Didn’t get a weight on him but he was well above average from what I have seen from Coke county. The gun is a Weatherby Mark V 270Wby Mag that I bought from another forum member. It is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Here you can see the white patch on his shoulders that earned him his name.

Day 7 my dad shot this 10 point. We both have a long history with this deer going back to 2008. He is a 6.5 year old and he had a huge home range although in the last couple of years he didn’t travel near as much as he once did. It was actually kinda sad seeing 3 old bucks (mine, my dads, and the G3 buck above) all bite the dust in less than a week after getting to know them so well over the years. The good thing is that dispite the severe drought conditions this year we still see lots of potential in some of the 3 year olds we have running around.

Day 8 was a pretty good day. One of the other hunters took this nice 10 point.

That same morning the daughter of one of the other hunters took this Turkey. It was her first critter she had ever shot and I think he said the shot was about 150 yards with a 250 Savage.

That evening her brother took this 10 point. His sister wasnt too happy because this buck had came by her earlier in the day but wouldn’t stop for a shot and shortly after that her brother got him. This buck did lots of traveling as well. My dad had tons of pics of him in October and then he showed up in my area a few nights before he caught a bullet from a 270 about a mile away.

HOPE EVERYONE HAD A GREAT FIRST WEEK!!

Glad you and your dad got your bucks! As you know I missed a huge 8 down there opening weekend as he came in and bedded 75 yards from me but with the sun directly in my eyes. Then he dashed off after a doe, never to be seen again. I have made a scope sahed out of a beer can and hope he returns to this area. It seems to be his core area as the trees around the feeder are rubbed all over. Ill be back next Friday morning looking for him!

Thanks for sharing your story and pictures. It looks like you all have a great place to hunt! I know what you mean about a feeling of sadness whenever a buck is shot that you watched grow up for several years or more. This has happened to me. A couple of years ago I shot a 10 point that I would liked to have let go another year, but he was 5.5 years old and the neighbors were after him too. I concluded that I would rather see him on my wall!

Congratulations on getting your 10 point! He was a heavy deer.
