I'm considering taking bow hunting, but dont know where to start or what bows to look at. Any suggestions?

There are a ton of great bows out there!!! The best bow on the market is the bow that fits you best and you like the most!!! Ken at Cinnamon Creek Ranch told a guy the other day that was in the shop when I was there that the only 3 bows he would stay away from are Elite, Strother, and Athens. I didn't hear the entire conversation but I heard him say something that they are the most prone to problems and especially cam lean.
I am not a Mathews fan but a lot of people swear by them but they have a lower priced brand called mission

Those are the biggest names in bows then you have some others that have come out and heard are pretty good bows as well

Best thing to do is go hit several proshops and shoot as many as you can!!! If you are in DFW area I recommend going to Cinnamon Creek Ranch!!

Buy a good used bow and see if bow hunting appeals to you before going all in. A lot of people want to get into bow hunting but then get out quick.

I bought a PSE Nova off of here for a good price and then decided I wanted to take the next step so I upgraded. It was equally likely that I would have quit after a few weeks. Got my money back on the PSE and then bought a Bowtech that I like fine. There are lots of bows for sell at Archery Talk (go to the classified forum).

thanks... also how often do bows need to have parts replaced? Because I have heard of people constantly having issues with their bows; which is why I have been hesitant to get into bow hunting in the past

This is actually some great advice. And is what I did and I'm hooked.

BUT BEST THING TO DO IS GO TO PRO SHOP AND TRY THEM OUT.

do whatever fits you best! don't just buy a bow because of the brand and i wouldnt be afraid to spend a little more money to buy a bow that fits and feels better to you.

The requirements that I have for a bow are:

- it must be quite
- it must fit me well & be comfortable to shoot and hold

Don't worry about the brand as long as it meets these two criteria.

Start going to some bow shops and shooting various brands. You will soon get the feel for what feels the most comfortable, what you shoot best, price point, etc. and that will help in your decision.

Warning: Bow hunting is addictive!!!!!!!!!

Not often. Arrows are my biggest thing to tear up if/when I miss the target and hit a fence.

The only thing that needs replaced is the string/cables about every two years or so depending on how much you shoot.

Learn to tune and maintain the bow yourself. It is not hard and is a lot of fun. I can do everything needed except those tasks that require a bow press.

Warning: bow hunting can also be expensive b/c it is addictive.
