I know this has been brought up a lot but here it goes again. I understand why they did it but it is killing us. We have a few bucks that are 4.5 to 5.5 that are very tall but narrow. We can't shoot them and they are going to breed more bucks like them. This is were the AR is a bad thing. We will not shoot anything that isn't mature and that's not bigger then the last buck I shot which missed Pope and Young by 7 inches. We have several good looking 8 points, a nice 6 point and a couple of nice 10 points but they are all 2.5 to 3.5 year olds. Then we have several of the tall, narrow bucks walking around. Sorry for the rant but the AR hurts us that actually are trying to grow a good herd and only shoot mature deer. Do yall have the same issues?

If its truly a "mature" deer then shoot it. Most game wardens have pretty good judgement. Better make sure it is "mature" though.

My County, Tyler, has that genetic problem of high, narrow racks!!! I hunted most of October and my tally is so far: AR's-2 and me-0, (seen 2 mature bucks with 12-12.5in spread)!!! But look at the bright side, you can kill off the does and young spikes and let the narrow rack bucks die off and then restock with good South Texas bucks and does and have trophy bucks in about 10 years or so[HEAVY in SARCASM]!!!

There is a solution if you want to take a little effort to solve the problem and that is to get into the MLD program.

If you are on a lease talk to the landowner about applying or if it's your property contact you local biologist and get the wheels turning for next season.

If you are on a small place then your going to have to live with it, or look for another place that doesn't have AR's.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

do you think if you took a few photos of the bucks and let the GW check them out he would let you shoot them? just a thought

Dont count on the game warden giving u any kind of pass on shooting a narrow rack buck. i promise you he will write that ticket! The problem we have in hopkins co. is now they are killing to many bucks and does and the population has crashed in the last 5yrs under ar rules and bag limits. Shot my first buck under ar in 5yrs and he was 13 and a eight in wide. When i took him to the prosseser and the biologist was there aging deer and he measured him twice and i told him i measured him 3 times! he asked me what if he hadnt measured 13in what would i have done and i told him i would have cut him up myself and we wouldnt be having this conversation! Needless to say he didnt like my answer and liked it even less when i told him as far as im concerned TPW ruined the hunting in hopkins co.

We were on a lease in Colorado County a couple of years ago and I will never again hunt AR. Jimbo is right - get on a MLD ranch. We joined a lease south of Seguin that is MLD and there are some real advantages. First, a much longer season (from October through February). Second, you can pretty much shoot anything within the ranch - not the States - guidelines. Third, you don't use up your deer tags so, if you are so inclined, you can take 4-5 deer off your MLD lease and still retain all of your Texas tags to go on invite hunts.
I would not count on a friendly game warden letting you slide with a 11"-12" deer in an AR county.

We used to have close to zero bucks at my place. Now there is a very healty population.

I love ARs. They're not perfect but they're better than the alternative.

And I have a couple of mature bucks that aren't wide enough as well. Take the good with the bad.

I know AR's aren't perfect but it used to be ANY buck was killed that had antlers. We do have a couple of mature bucks that won't make 13",but we also have some young deer with great potential. They're not perfect but we have more bucks than we used too.My biggest complaint is the extended spike and doe season,It makes hunters think that we have an overpopulation problem which at least in our area we do not have.I say make Erath and other AR counties 1 buck (anybuck)and 1 doe only.

Tyler County was a 2-buck, 2-doe county before AR's and they decided to save younger bucks so they implemented AR's!!! Wouldn't they have done the same thing by just reducing the bag limit???

That is what I was going to recommend. You have to remember these guys usually carry a lot of common sense and while they are likely not going to let everyone get a pass who shoots a 12.5" wide 5.5 year old deer they might give you the go ahead if they realize you have pics and are trying to manage the herd. They might not though.

I killed a buck that we would never see in years past on our place on Sat. Along with the co-op myself and our neighbors have formed ARs are working in Fannin County. It was the 1st buck I've killed in 8 years, but I'm ok with killing does.

A GW can not give permission to kill an illegal buck under any circumstance.

Most if not all will take everything they can into consideration before writing a ticket if you do the right thing.
If a person decides to try to get away with it and is caught any chance of leniency pretty much goes out the window.

My question is, was the last "very mature" buck you shot on a serious down hill slide? If he was 7in shy of P&Y that's 118in! Could just be your genetic's, because 118's that are 13in wide are 2.5YO 95% of the time in north Texas!!

No he was 21-22 inch inside spread. We have some big deer around here. Just the issue with the tall, narrow rack bucks.

I spoke with a TPWD biologist about this issue at length last week. At this point, the TPWD doesn't see this as a problem based on past research. However, he also admitted that if there is a problem, the data to support isn't going to be captured because 1) hunters are not going to shoot these deer so they can be recorded or even worse 2) they will shoot them and then just leave them in the woods.

I support the current AR's, but I also recognize they are based on studies done on deer in the genetic-rich areas of South Texas. Anyone with even the slightest experience with Texas deer knows the difference between South and East Texas deer.

So your only legal option for dealing with these deer is to go under a TPWD Managed Lands Program.

IMO, the truth is going to come out in years to come when it becomes obvious that while the current AR's have improved the overall age class of Texas deer, it has also protected a lot of inferior bucks.

And I say this because I've seen an increase in these tall, narrow-racked deer as well.

I understand the reason they put the rule in place, but I hate the darn things. If I see a nice mature buck that I would like to take ,I don't want to have to try to figure out if it's 12 1/2 or 13 inch.

ive hunted lavaca, wharton and colorado counties For Many Years. The ar law has done wonders with the deer we have! Before ar a 100 inch deer was big! Its not perfect, but it keeps people from shooting anything with horns, as they did before!
