Hi guys, shot an axis spike last night. Only the second one that's been seen on the ranch as far as I know. I thought I remember reading somewhere that the meat was different tasting than regular whitetail - maybe a little more gamey. Any thoughts or recommendations, or just treat it the same way we do other deer? (Im trying to upload the pic but not sure how on my new DROID. Man, a smartphone in the blind doesn't feel like how hunting used to, but it sure is fun checking the weather and updating my fantasy team if the deer aren't running)

Man, if you like whitetail you are going to LOVE Axis. You have taken about 10 steps up in the world of venison. I like whitetail venison a lot but I ADORE Axis. You are one lucky man to have gotten it. Melt in your moth backstrap and tenderloins. MMMM-mmmmm-mmmmm.

I think Axis is much better than whitetail as do most others I've talked to.

Whitetail is good but comparing it to axis is like comparing Mcdonald's to Ruth Chris. Not even in the same league.

I disagree, as a sentiment of brotherhood, I will gladly dispose of the Axis for you. No man should have to bear the brunt of ingesting such a beast. Please let me know where to meet you, and I will handle the disposal of said meat.

Axis is great. My son got a 15" 3x3 this weekend. My goal is to try to get one a year.

You will want to quit eating whitetail. It will spoil you so please send the backstrap to me and I will dispose of it.

Just a heads up on the Axis. All yearling Axis, as most other exotics are yearlings as spikes. Congrats on the kill no doubt, but if you want bigger axis, let them grow for a couple years, and then you'll have some huge backstraps.

These so called "undocumented" deer are stealing the food from our deer. How is a hardworking buck supposed to feed his doe and fawns if we don't get rid of such nuisance. I guess you are gonna tell me they just eat the food our whitetail won't touch? I don't think so! LOL, great job and enjoy your venison.

I just had a buddy give me some Jalapeno sausage made from Axis/Pork and it was fantastic! He had it processed at B&W Meats in Houston.

I dont ever take axis to the processor. Im sure it heads to their house and you get WT meat. Once you grind it it is hard to tell the difference. Once you make it in to sausage it is darn near impossible. Axis is best enjoyed when it is not processed beyond a steak or roast. I never take anything but bulk trimmings to a processor. I know what I am getting that way.
