Anyone heard of someone being fined for a deer between 12.75" and 13" in an AR?

Poor old boy in our camp shot a 12 and 7/8 and is freaking out. That's why I don't mess w/ anything under 14". I told him not to take that thing out of camp. Don't think he listened. It is what it is...I guess. Might be an expensive deer. Maybe more than the lease dues...

There needs to be some common Sense about this. I think ar's are ok not great but ok. But what ticks me off is them writing tickets for 1/4 off. I say if the buck is mature there shouldn't be a prob but if the little guy still has milk on his lip then I would agree totally on the ticket...

I agree with ragtag. Had a 12 3/4" deer two years ago (not from an AR county)that scored 157, had like 16 points . Was about 6 1/2 years old. To give someone a ticket for that I think would've been stupid, but then again it doesn't matter what we think. It is up to the individual game warden to let it go or slap you with a fine. I don't shoot unless they are clearly outside the ears and at leaast 4 1/2 years old.

Game Wardens are just like anyother LEO. They have the choice to use their discretion. With that being said, I have personally seen confiscated antlers in the back of a GWs pickup that where anywhere from 10.5 to 12.625 inches. I wouldn't risk it, and there is no need to get mad because the tape dose'nt lie.

If I was given a ticket for a 12.75 deer, i would want a trial. The book shows the standard is the width of the deer's ears and if my deer matched or exceeded that then it should be a legal deer.

"If it's close, don't shoot."
IMO, the key is to make sure there is a noticeable gap between the inside of the mainbeam and the outside edges of the ears.

The book says ears in the alert position are approximately 13" apart, also states a buck must be 13-inch or greater to be legal.
Good binoculars all but eliminate guess work, zoom in and count the hairs on his chin.
When in doubt don't whupp it out.

Tell the GW you had a bad case of ground shrinkage.

Why doesn't TP&W have a gray area fine where you pay an extra fee, but get to keep the deer if the buck has a 12 1/2 to 12 15/16 spread? This would provide extra income for the state, but would not make someone a criminal for a 1/2 inch violation.

AR'S ARE STUPID......A person should not have to sit in a stand and worry if they will get in trouble if the deer they see will not be wide enough!!!

They could go the way of the hunting industry and sell tags by the B&C inch.
50"-100" = $xx.xx 101"-120" = $xx.xx 121"- and so on and so on
Then if you tag a buck over the limit of the tag you bought just pay the fine for the appropriate (B&C score) tag of your buck.
Hunting has gotten Soooo complicated!
