I am always reading on here trying to gain insight on everything gun dog related because I am training my first dog, a 7 month old yellow lab, and I am working to get him conditioned to whistle commands when he is out of voice range.

Are there any particular whistle sequences that any of you use for certain commands? For example 4 loud quick bursts = come, or 1 burst = sit.

I've never had a dog of my own before to take hunting, though I've hunted over many of other people's dogs, so this is a new experience for me. So far it has been extremely fun and rewarding. I am learning just as much as he is as we both progress as hunter and trainer. So far he has retrieved about a dozen dove and 5 teal during early season, easy single and double marks, even bringing back a few live birds on his first 2 real hunts.

1 Toot= Sit
2 Toot= move / change direction
3+ Toot= come in.
Not sure about others but with Spaniels we also use a tone that goes from low to high, which means to quarter a bit closer. The sound is the same type of whistle you would use to get someones attention.

This sounds most like what I do. With some of our labs, we use something like the last one as a 'find it' command when they are close enough to use their nose on a blind.

He is getting good at finding birds blind with his nose within say 30-50 yards, sometimes I wish he would just look up and use his eyes a little more. We haven't worked on it from any real distance that's kind of where I hope to extend to with some whistle cues.

I see something for changing directions. Do you have a whistle for back as well? Is this even necessary? I'm not ready to start any casting yet but just for future reference.

To answer your last question, about a back signal. In most cases...You would give the whistle for sit first. Then use body language/ hand signals along with the 2 peep, Or saying the command BACK / OVER.
To be honest - After working with most dogs they learn the game enough to read your body language. Even at 200+ yds.
Just remember.. right now you are working with a little sponge. Get the basics, such as sit and Come/here and heel first. Once those are reliable then you start to build. With a pup try to make everything a game and fun. If you try to push most pups too hard they will quit on you. 10~15 minutes at a time then rest for a while.

beep=sit
double beep=here

I'm not fond of a trill come in whistle. It's overly repetitive and not necessary. A dog should come in when told to do so without the whistle constantly blowing.

It really doesn't matter what you blow or how you blow it as long as your consistent.

i believe that most of us that say we use a repetitive "here" command on the whistle are upland hunters. it just works better, i.e. distance/brush/wind/constantly running dogs ...

In my past experience, the fewer whistles the better. Your pup needs to learn to SIT on one whistle. Come on several as mentioned above. This for retrievers.

Also in my past experiences, You better train him to STOP on one whistle or you will blow the "pea" out of the whistle trying to get him to stop and ruin a good hunt.

Good point about the STOP. Get the whistle sit down, then expand it to a whistle STOP. One blast.
