This is probably not a new topic but I am new to bow hunting and need some help. I have a crossbow and need to know how to find the arrow after a shot. Is there something to put on it to help see the arrow? And how far out do you look from the point of impact?

I have Nockturnal's on My hunting arrows and are great. I shot at a doe last wensday and shot over her back while hunting from a ground blind. I think My arrow flew into the river ! HAHA ! $ 8.00 for arrow, 11.00 grimreaper, 10.00 lighted nock...$ 29.00 I lost in a split second !!! hehehe !

Its cool at almost dark Ya hit an animal with a lighted nock and dont get total pass thru, You can see the animall hauling but thru the woods with that nock blazing away. very cool.

Best thing you can do is know exactly what direction you shot. I have lost a few in my back pasture for various reasons, if I know exactly where I released it more times than not I can run down the arrow.

Like Scot said, try to remember the direction and what was behind the animal when you shot. I've lost arrows on target pass thru's just because they can sure get under grass in a hurry.
Frankly that is the last of my problems, I never worry too much about losing an arrow, they sure don't cost that much.

Lighted nocs are defintely a good solution. Even if you can't see it during the daylight hours, if you know the general area where the arrow went, you can return that evening and often times the noc is still lit and you can see it easily in the dark. Most lighted nocs on the market today will stay lit for hours.

Lost arrows are just part of archery. Every now and then I will find one from years back that got embedded under the thatch of my lawn, often just a few paces from my targets. Even with bright fletchings they can be nigh impossible to spot. Out in the field it can be even harder. Especially when your blood is pumping and you want to know where the animal went. I try to always locate a landmark right behind my point of aim, but even so, the movement of the animal and ricochet can send a shaft anywhere. Lighted nocks sure help, and prior to them I used reflective tape. Being elevated helps a bunch, but I hunt from the ground most of the time and if there is not a backstop or there is dense vegetation then it can be a real chore to spot the arrow. With luck there will be lots of blood and you can track both your kill and your shaft. Then there are always broken shafts, broad heads embedded in logs and the endless task of fletching maintenance. Oh the joys of stick and string...

As I say whenever I lose one (which is often enough), an arrow is just an arrow. But I agree that the cost of them is getting too much to not get a little upset. But on to being serious, if you shot at an animal and think the arrow passed through you need to find the arrow because you can tell a lot about where you hit it and how long you need to wait before starting your tracking job. There are no secrets other than looking hard sometimes but some products can help.

Are you talking about after shooting a animal or a target where you miss it?
If you missed the target, something that happens to all of us, you should have seen when it hit dirt. What I do, is take a butter knife and go where I last saw dirt puff up. I drag the knife across the ground. I keep backing up till the blade hits the arrow. They are always just under the grass and dirt.
If you shot something, the arrow is usually laying on top of the ground if it passed thru. If you are up, should be stuck in the ground. But if you can't find it at all, may still be in the animal.

If you miss its probably in the dirt.. If its a pass through its probably laying on top of the ground.
