I am going to be looking at a new rifle soon. I am most likely getting the TC Venture. The question I have is the caliber. I want something a bit more powerful than a 270 but not quite a 30-06. Would 7mm rem mag be a good choice or .308? I am very new to rifle calibers and am not sure what is more powerful than what.

Here is a link to the caliber chart they have a ton.

http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/venture.php

Really just looking for a good all around powerful rifle but not too powerful for deer. Also would like the ammo to be not hard to find.

30-06 isn't too much IMO and you can almost expect to buy it at 7-11 it's so popular. 270 is a great round also and you can use either for deer or elk for that matter.

I'm hesitent to comment on this. Everyone has their favorite and will defend that caliber to the end. In my opinion there is not much pratical difference between all the calibers you mentioned. FYI, my all around rifle is a 7 mag.

Thanks guys, one of the other reasons I am looking beyond the 270 is that my hunting buddy already has one, would be nice for us to have a second caliber and just to have something different from him.

As far as power, can someone rate these for me... 270, 7mm mag, 7mm08, 308, and 30-06.

Can't think that anyone would dispute that over the last 50 years, 30.06 has been the most chosen and versitile rifle cal. around. When I was a kid, all of my uncles and cousins and just about anybody who hunted had one. That being said, I dont own one. I don't hunt where I need one. I love my lever action, not a fan of scopes for deer, but will occasionally use my scoped .223 for deer hunting. If I need something with a bit more thump, I use my .45 cal. muzzleloader. It is a 26 inch barrel with a 1:20 twist and with 150 gr. of powder, is pushing 2700 fps. Same as a 30.06 .

The main reason I would say 30.06 is the selection of different grains of shells. I use the 165 boat tail my self. All the calibers you mentioned will do the job. Good luck.

Within 300 yards they will all do the same thing on a deer type animal if you do your part. If you really want to examine the data in an easy way go to the Federal Ammo website and download their ballistics app and compare away.

http://www.federalpremium.com/resources/ballistics_application.aspx

7mm mag and 06 will have some more recoil than the others and you can find ammo anywhere.

7mm-08 and 308 can also be found most places nowadays. It's hard to beat a 7mm-08 for easy shooting.

Also, on such closely matched guns, you might want to look at projectile costs. Some are half the cost of others.

Winner! Load it up for Elk or load it down for whitetail. Kill anything on the planet and the recoil is very mild with the 130/140 whitetail load. Less than my .270. Stay away from the WSM or WSSM fad. That's all it is.

Depends on where you hunt. Down far south or in the panhandle where the deer are really big and the ranges can be really far, a 300 WinMag isn't too much as long as you can handle the recoil. I used to have a 338 and although I bought it for elk hunting, I killed a few deer with it. Too much recoil for me though. I ended up with a 270 cause that's what my Dad shot and his deer never ran more than a few feet; if at all.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I've killed deer with a 40 S&W so whatever pops your corn... Basically, I figure anything that will kill a man will kill a deer.

You don't need magnums to effectively and easily kill whitetails. I've got plenty of them and generally they're way more gun than is needed. I kill big South Texas deer out to 400 yards with a .270 Win.

The .270 and 30-06 are based on the exact same cartridge. Both are flat shooting and hard hitting. The 7 Rem Mag is only slightly more powerful. The 7-08 and the 308 (.243 Win) are all based off of the 308 cartridge. They're all flat shooting and hard hitting too.

All will do the job just fine. My personal preference is the .270 Win. Pick the caliber that works for you best. The 7 mag and 30-06 will have the most recoil of the bunch.

I too would avoid the WSM/WSSM fad. As time goes by the ammo for these rounds will be harder to find and more expensive.

7mag is more than an -06... I'd look at 7-08, 270wsm or 280.

IMO, I like the 30 cal's, but that is just me. Its all about being comfortable with the gun and more importantly is being able to shoot it accurately with the proper round.

So is a 7mm-08 "more powerful" than a .270?

My 2 cents. All the calibers listed above I own or have owned. All are great calibers and all will kill Texas whitetail! From what I took from original post is you are looking for a modestly priced caliber that is easy to find and managable recoil. Every thing above fits that bill. Now my favorite Texas deer round is the .25-06 and the 6mm Remington. But, both of those calibers are a bit higher priced and not as easy to find (think wal-mart). If I was going to reommend a caliber to you use as a when ever and what ever hunting rifle I would strongly suggest you look at a .300 Win. Mag. It is a .30 caliber bullet like the .30-06 and the .308 with a larger case (more powder). Too munch gun for Texas? Maybe, but it will reach out farther than the 06 and 308 and if you ever get to hunt any where else in North America you are covered. The ammo (Federal and Remington) at walmart is very affordable (Federal blue box is well unde $30 last time I checked. And recoil in a Remington model 700, Browning stalker, and Ruger #1 were all with
in the same level as my .30-06s.

I shot a 300 win mag ONCE! Handed it back to my hunting buddy. He sold it later during the season to a unsuspecting rookie. Just not necessary to take that kind of punishment.

I shoot a 30-06 and I would consider getting one. One of the best all around rifles to own. I have shot all calibers above and wouldn't want to shoot anything but my 30-06

The OP stated he was new to rifle calibers. Is it really a good idea to recommend a magnum in anything? Get a rifle that will be fun and easy to shoot...one that can help you develop good skills.

Then if you want to go shoot magnums go for it! wink

What is little recoil to some is a lot to others.

I'd certainly agree that the 30-06 is the most versatile round for North America. You can even get reduced recoil loads to hunt deer and practice. Plus you would be well set up for nearly anything.

For just deer hunting a 7mm-08 would be the easiest to shoot with plenty of power. 270 is great and very popular. 308 has a wide range of capabilities as well and is a great round.

Having said that a lot of men, women, and youths hunt elk, black bear, and moose with a 7mm-08.

This is sort of like debating your favorite brand of whiskey. All brands accomplish the same thing.
