I went out to do some scouting today and ran across this tree. Is it Burl or a Fungus?

It looks like the face of an old, big nosed troll facing to the right.

I have no idea what causes that.

It's a type of canker, caused by an insect or diesese in the phloum of the tree. What you see is where the tree is trying to "repair" the damage caused by the injury.

Not the shrek face, but the other area's on the main trunk will have some great character for knife handles or pen/pencil blanks if cross sawed if you're into wood work... Would also make some tremendously awesome looking bowls turned on a lathe !!!!!
