Is it true in New Mexico you have to get an outfitter if you don't live there. Are do they have public land o hunt on. Thanks

Short answers are:

1) No.
2) Yes.

I lived in New Mexico for 2 years a few years ago, so I have not hunted NM as an out of state hunter, but there are several folks on here that do hunt NM yearly that can better address your questions. If you do not draw a tag, ie for elk, then outfitters usually have access to landowner tags.

Check out the New Mexico Game & Fish website for more info.

Some one posted about their New Mexico hunt just a little while back, they hunted elk and mule deer. They did say the landowner still had elk tags.

Outfitters are NOT required to hunt in New Mexico, but most all of the big game license such as elk, antelope, and deer are available thru a lottery draw. Non-resident hunting fees can be expensive as well as land-owner tags!

Here the link to that New Mexico hunt for elk

Since you have to pay for out of state license at least with an elk you get a lot more meat.

Your odds of drawing a non-resident tag are increased a little by putting in for the draw under the outfitted division. I drew a muzzle loader elk hunt (got a tall 4x4) and mule deer tag (got a nice and tall 3x3). Both of the units I put in for were very hard to draw tags in premium units. I got extremely lucky this year. It's just like a lottery on the draw for tags in New Mexico. The better units are a lot harder to draw, due to the number of people that put in for that unit.
