This is something that has been discussed on our lease before, and it never fails that a "cull" to one isn't a cull to another. How do you handle culls on your lease? Our problem is that we are in a one buck county, so the culls are for guests that must be accompanied by a lease member.

We run cameras year round and have about 8 of them up, I would think it would be pretty easy to develop a "hit" list complete with photos and let everyone submit "candidates" for the hit list.

A little about our genetics (deer, not human), we RARELY have anything more than an 8. We get an occasional 9, and those are rather rare. Now supposedly, a guy on the next ranch over killed a 14 last year, (pics or it didn't happen) but I haven't seen anything over a 9 or a weak 10 by a split g3 and a sticker off the g2.

Any other ideas? What do you consider a cull? WHat about spikes, 1.5 YO spikes, let'em walk or add them to the "list".

thats a loaded question. depends on where your at and what your land can hold. on my lease every single buck would be a cull compared to alot of other leases. bang crying if your rarely seeing 8's then sounds like your deer are or were being taken out too young. give them time to mature and you will have much better results but the 2-3 years in between will suck.

oh, we have plenty of 8's.... 8's out the wazoo...

very few big 8's, a few 7's, a couple of 6's, some 1.5 forks and a few 1.5 spikes.

Last year, I don't remember seeing 1 single spike, even after plowing through probably at least 8K pictures... and I have found 3 different spikes just going though the last months pictures.

a "cull" at Bubba's Watering Hole at 1AM is not the same as a "cull" at the Playboy Mansion.

Now where did I put that popcorn? grin

A mature buck that doesn't meet your definition of a trophy.

Sorry you didn't get the response you were looking for. We have had a few threads that went down this road and some took turns that went alot deeper into it than the question you asked.

A cull IMO is a buck that is determined to show traits that are not wanted within your herd. Some examples are a buck with no browtines, a 3.5 year old deer with seven points or less, a mature 8 point with large G2's and short 3's, spikes, etc. The list will be different for areas, ranches, and for different people.

Some people separate culls from management bucks. To some, management bucks are mature deer that will never amount to anything. Basically, they show antler traits like short tines, small frames, no mass, etc. Many people have a hard time differentiating between a cull and management buck and many definitions of the two are different depending on who you ask.

But, they serve the same purpose...to improve the aesthetics of antlers within your herd. The question is "will it make a difference?" Now that is where things really get interesting rofl

Our problem is our culls have screwed up, misformed racks with 1-2 points on each side and the rack goes up 14-16 inches but are only 8-10 inches wide. We call them Ole Lady bucks, cant live with them, can't kill them.

Every deer you kill is a cull.
