Seems to be a tough area to find fellow deer hunters? Anyone else I could shoot the breeze with about what they're shooting/seeing?

I live just outside of Franklin. I have all my cams at my place in E Tx, so I don't know what kind of deer I have here at home. I also hunt at my FIL's place just south of Hearne. Now he has the deer. I finally got my buck last year at his place with my bow on the very last day, last ten min of light. Just a 6 pt but he was 16" wide.

I'm 30 minutes up 79 from Franklin. Not many acorns right now. I'm seeing buck tracks and plenty of does right now.Waiting for the 1st good cold front.

I just started hunting a friends unused 100 acres in calvert. so far I have a 12pt,10point,4,spike on my cam and a ton of hogs. Funny thing is I grew up in calvert (weekend farm) off of 979 and we saw a total of 2 deer the 15 years we had the place. (heavily wooded). This was a total suprise. I was hopeing for at the least 1 solitary hog to show up on my game cam...and got more.

The biggest buck I ever seen in Robertson Co was off 979, between 4 mile store and Calvert. He was a monster chasing a doe around in a wide open pasture. That was a few yrs back though.

I have never hunted the area, but I work for UPRR and my regular run is from Houston to Hearne, and I have seen a couple good bucks off the tracks in the last couple of weeks between Hearne and Bryan. Almost hit a big 10 pt near the off campus Aggie Bonfire site a few days ago that would have pushed the 140 mark.

It's that yellow guy on the yellow bicycle. He scares all the hunters! muyloco

I used to hunt a lot in the area between Hearne and Calvert. I haven't seen much recently due to the drought. If you have water or are near the river, you may have better luck.

I occasionally hunt over off of 979/2027 just west of the river. There are some deer and a lot of pigs out that way. We dont always see deer but its almost a given to see pigs

I shot a 115 inch 8 this morning just south of Camp Arrowmoon.
My FNL has a big ranch at 79/Navasot. Hunted there the last two years. Also hunted his place near Black Bridge outside of Calvert. I can tell you this, some big bucks are shot but once acorns drop and the deer start rutting it's super tough hunting. Nothing like west and south Texas. You're gonna have three things happen....get super lucky, get skunked or see a bunch of young ones. Two years ago the bucks started chasing/checking the week before youth weekend. Last year they seemed to start a little later. This year....who knows. They want the acorns bad and they are not there yet. Some fell with this last wind but they are super small. Don't be afraid of hunting open fields and be prepared to stalk a chasing buck.
