A lot probably depends on supplemental feeding.

I've had several people tell me that down south during years with good rain the deer have a lot more palatable stuff that isn't as high in protein. During drier years the stuff that survives is higher in protein. Whether there is any truth to that I don't know. Of course, this isn't your normal dry spell either.

I'm hearing this from the oldtimers also, most claim the best antlers years in the past have been in drought years.

I have been feeding for 6 years and mine are down. I have one that has exploded but all the others I can identify from last year are definitely dwon from last year. Looking like a management kinda year. Not to mention Im missing nearly the entire 5.5 yr old class because the drought in 2006 hit us really hard. Lots of fawns running around so far this year. Hope they make it.

Let'em grow old
