I just wanted to get a collective opinion on something that I have thought about over the years and honestly gone back and fourth on what I thought. Wich of these three maps do you find to be the most accurate when it comes to birds, the migration, and cold fronts? A: B: C:
"My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am."

Not all cold fronts are created equal so there is no real answer to your question.
Also majority of ducks stop at food source and open water. A mallard will not fly all the way Texas just because of a front.

I find "A" My best time to hunt. Ducks feed more and move more before a front. Where I hunt anyway.

A. is dead on with bluewings during september. its also usually pretty accurate on what i see. however if its been hot like early november, and a nasty front pushes thru, i'll usually see a ton more birds hanging around after the front as shown in C., assuming that the temps are nice and cold.

last year I saw something I have never seen before. I was hunting Lake X and a cold front blew in about 8:30. I looked up and u could see the clouds rolling in and right in front of it was about 600 ducks way way up there, wings wide open not even flapping them. It was beautiful. I hit my hail call and actually got a few pinails, mallards that came down, finished my limit. It was a awesome sight to see.
JUST HERE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME I dont understand people that dont duck hunt

I shoot limits in A and C. I hunt the prairie when the front is about to hit and then after it has passed I hunt C- the coast.

I remember hunting one morning approx. 2 hours before the front was supposed to hit...hunted a pond on the prairie and let's just say there was a mixed bag....mallard, pintail, redheads, goldeneye, ringneck, hooded merganser, greenwing teal, wood duck(not shown), spoonbill and a speck....Front was so strong seemed like it pushed every kind of bird south. That being said, birds fly right before the wind.

Before the Cold front.... Same blind.. Next day.. Right after the front blew through, hunted in the evening and slaughtered the ducks. Sat and watched hundreds of redheads work in the decoys. The day before we killed everything that came within range and barely ended up with limits. The day after the front was easy limits.

You can kill em the same in every scenario..... just not in the same spot.
The weather change will affect the wants and needs of both the birds leaving and the ones coming in as well the birds that will stick it out. To easily explain I'll just do it day by day.
In scenario A, or day before the front, hunt a loafing or staging area. In this weather pattern you will have ducks congregating in large groups to jump into the wind and head south as well as ducks riding the head winds and wanting to sit down and rest.
In scenario B, day of the front, hunt thermal cover. Ducks that were gonna leave have are headed out or are already gone. The ducks sticking in town are hunkering down out of the wind and cold. New birds riding in or have just arived ahead of the front are in rest and recover mode from the flight and cold.
In scenario C, day after the front, hunt the food. Ducks that stayed as well as the new birds are tired, cold, and hungry. They will be stocking up on carbs to burn and keep them warm as well as renurish from flight.

c. would be my opinion. Most of the birds show up just after a cold front, not before

It doesn matter when the limit is only 6 ducks, and 2 on pintails. Back in europe, there is no limit, then it does matter....
Coming back from a 1 person hunt with 65 ducks in the car......

I Like all the responses guys. Good discussion.
After this we can talk about sand bars, airboats, and boat lanes.
