There have been some red deer spotted on the place I hunt. Are there any restrictions for hunting exotics that have escaped and are now wild?

I tried doing a little searching here, but I was unable to narrow down the number of threads to make it manageable.

Any help is appreciated.

Legally if they are ear taged or branded, you have an obligation to report them to the county sheriff. There is then a time-period that the owner can 'claim' them and be given reasonable opportunity to retrieve - exact same laws as cattle. If they are not claimed within that time period or otherwise identifyable, they are free game.

Nice thing to do is as darrack mentioned. Unless they are super genetics, based on the current price, I tend to doubt a rancher would come to collect them unless said rancher is a trapper themselves.

Thanks for the information. I am going to let the land owner know and see if he can find a brand or tag. I think he wants to let them breed and multiply for a while so I don't plan on shooting one, but I needed to have the information.

If a big gnarly buck walks out I may have to call in for a ruling though!! laugh

Don't forget that they compete for forage with whitetails, but sure would be cool to have a few around. I guess I would make a valiant effort to contact land owner and if he showed little interest in getting them back I would shoot away.
