So I am a first year hunter and been loving it. As many of you know the birds have began to do some pretty high flying now, and man if that doesnt just kick my arse.
I cant hit em for poop.

Ive read that when they begin to fly high you'll need to lead em at about 6ft, is this true?
Im sure others may be curious to know and figured the vast amount of knowledge here can help.

Next trip I will also be trying out a Mojo Dove, would this even help with them flying so high?

I also tried different shots 6, some 7.5 and 8's. I tried modified choke as well as full and I have a 28" barrell.
Thanks for any help or input.

Mojo's will never hurt so give it a shot. I have pulled migrating birds down from the edge of space with a mojo before. They cup like ducks. Pretty cool to watch.

The mojo should help you. Also, not taking shots that are unrealistic will help to not educate the birds. About 50 yards should be your max shot and even this is pushing it. If they are treetop high and passing overhead, I will give them about a 4' lead and that usually works well.

Live to hunt, hunt to live.

I normally give them a pass. It's hard to judge sometimes how high they are. I can count on one hand the # I have taken up high. But I don't hunt whitewing fields. I marked one off at about 100 paces he was hauling so fast. My favorite shot though out of hundreds & hundreds.

I pick my shot because most of the time all you gonna do is make a cripple out of it and it aint worth it in my opinion. I think your better hunters think that way also

I hunted a tank in Midland opening weekend with 2 buddys. Mojo was set at 20 yds, close to the water. I watched them go through at least 4 boxes each to get a limit trying to hit passing birds at 40+ yards. I just waited for the birds to come in to the mojo, just like ducks. My dad always says pick your battles, I think the same applies to shooting birds (especially when you're shooting steel $$)

Thanks & Gig 'em

Those high flyers are why I carry a pocketful of buckshot when I go dove hunting.

'Pick your shots' is very important, although the passion of the moment sometimes negates patience.
Wind direction and speed are always factors. Birds coming in with the wind will usually turn into the wind on approach, wait until they are flying into the wind.
Sometimes I will take those wild shots just for the Hey of it, not very often. I have taken leads up to 5+ ft. before with success, depends on conditions.
Being a good wing just takes experience and at some point things become instinct, thinking to much can be a hindrance.
Good Luck!
PS - I was given a MOJO a couple of years ago and have not used it yet. Do they work that well? I only have one.

Most of the time my mojo will bring them down enough to make it an easy shot.

LOL, really or are you just yanking my chain? I have a box of buckshot but I think that would be more for just trying to take out frustration on a group of em :p

That gets me excited. Like I said this is my first year ever doing anytime of hunting so im still learning a lot. I told my dad I was going to buy one of the Mojo's and he said two are better than one so he also bought me one, so we will see.
He goes out there just to hang out with me and he doesnt hunt at all, he said he has enough enjoyment, hopefully we can bring some of em in this next time with the mojos.

Nah I was just trying to get a rise, but there has been a few times I wish I did have buckshot to take out frustration on those high flyers.

Went out the other day and probably saw 100 birds, not one of which was low enough to hit.

I hunted central Texas last Saturday, white wings. Flying over the tree tops they were about 60 to 70 feet up and moving on a tail wind. These are big birds and hard to bring down. I shot 7.5 and 6s. Lead was about six feet on the ones up the highest. I hit probably 30 birds, only bagged 13. I would see feathers fly and the bird just kept going. My dog did find several dead birds later in the day. You've got to lead them a bunch and hit 'em solid or you'll come up empty. Of course, if it was easy - everybody would be doing it.

awesome thanks for the input. That lead info is def what I needed to know, cause i wasnt leading them anywhere near that distance. I still have some 6's and just bought some 7.5's, im pretty excited to see how I do tomorrow with a little more knowledge.

Go and shoot some sporting clays. Sporting is the best thing to improve your wingshooting ability.

Ive done pretty well as far as accuracy the only things that gets me is the HIGH flyers lol
first time out I got 5 birds with 16 rounds. Not the best but for first year I feel that my accuracy is pretty decent. I know there is always room to improve though.

Was born and used to be stationed down there...

If you were closer, I was going to offer to try to get you on some birds.

When shooting the high fliers white wings and you hit one, watch it! Many times they will fly past you and fall about 50-100 yards away dead. I know some on this tread say they do not shoot at the high flying birds. Remember I have hunted beside you and know at what altitude you are still shooting duel
