Has anyone bowhunted or blackpowder for elk in the Lone Cone Area, Devils Hole or Preachers Chair, just wondering what the herd was like in that area and success rate.

Bowhunted it quite a bit back in the day. Had good resident herd and getting a shot at a young bull was not difficult. Watch the weather - snowed 6" one opening morning in September. Better be in good shape - most of our hunting was done above 10K!!!! Good luck!

Almost 28 years in that area. Elk herd is growing, boocoo cows move through Lone Cone to the winter range. Both Devils hole and Preachers chair are good if some idiot doesn't set up camp in there. Usually quite a few wallows in them mixed in the fallen timber. The above approach through the rock sometimes works out good, but expect them to evade down and south. You will have outfitters on both ends of the lake working too. I do see more hunters in there than in the 80's. Allot of work getting one out too.
They usually will exit the mountain either towards North Mountain and the low country in Dry Creek Basin or Disappointment Vally, or through the National Forrest (good place) down Natarita (sp) canyon or split off to Norwood.
Had to add. You probably know this, but the winds in them both can be a real sumbich to predict
