Central Texas buck:

The one in the back ground is the one I am having a hard time with; I know the front one needs a few more seasons.

Date and time are not right on these.

I agree give him another year.

A hunt based on only trophies being taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be,time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there. -Fred Bear

Hard to tell much from those angles on the pics about his age, but he looks middle aged.

For those needing better pics:

The squatty racked 8:

and the Nine:

I am thinking about taking the squatty racked fella out as he hasn't been much the last two seasons. May try to keep the 9 around for another year or two.

Want to see age guesses for both and score guesses on the 9. I was surprised how much mass came off when they went hard-horned. Maybe the 9 is a P&Y deer, perhaps not. I keep going back and forth on him.

I think that the 9 will gross P&Y, but not net. He looks 4 1/2 to me, but the difference between 4.5 and 5.5 in that area is a tough call.

I would say the 8 is a 3 1/2. Not sure what your herd looks like, but I have seen many deer make a big jump between 3.5 and 4.5. Wouldn't hurt to take him out, but you might be surprised if you give him another year.

I would shoot the squatty racked 8 and leave the 9. They both are close in age if not the same.

up Now your talking a language I can understand.

From one waffler to another...I agree with you about shooting the 8. I was just trying to make the point that sometimes there are deer that need killing more depending on the herd and you have to select which ones to take due to tag limitations. I think he needs to go, but from 3.5 to 4.5, he could (probably not, but could) make a jump in antler growth.

I think I will probably cull the squatty racked deer. We have several straight up eights. He is the most inferior racked buck. Now I just need to figure out if he will break 13"

Thanks fellas!

The 2nd pic from 9/20, 9pt, would guess his age at 5.5 based on his face adn hind quarters...looks a little "huntch up," and the neck is throwing me for a loop (pre-rut)...but id say he's 135, not showing much potential to be greater...bow kill in my book!

I give up on aging these deer. The spacing of the 2s and 3s on the 8 are making me think this is the same buck from 2010 and 11. That'd put him at 5.5 or 6.5 this year and the body doesn't fit that slot, to me.

The squatty 6 never really changed and I think its the same deer, but he has always been stockier than his running mate. IF THEY ARE THE SAME - are they?

The 8 appears to be the same deer as the 9 to me. Older deer in leaner times often don't look as old. Much the same very healthy, read fat, deer tend to look older than they are to me.

Thanks, Red. Initially I was thinkning hold off on him, but now I am thinking both deer are post-mature.

Kinda fun keeping this thread going. Looks like LongBeams made a pretty good jump this year.

Now I am questioning whether or not the 2010 and 2011 pics are the same buck. That would put this guy near 8.5.
