well dove hunting turned into a early morning hog hunt..... property has a HUGE field along side a nice creek with lots of woods surrounding it, very well known hog territory... plan was to have 5 guys waiting on tree line with rifles and 5 guys walking the woods trying to push something out. plan turned into 5 guys total since some guys were butt hurt about not being able to shoot.

show up to the field and we split off, 2 guys (me and guy brian) on tree line as shooters, my dad his buddy and my buddy walking the woods. i'm walking to set up and see a hog about 700-800 yards out then he dissapeared into the woods by the creek line. we set up, 5 minutes later two coyotes enter the field at about 350 yards, i pass on taking a shot cause they haven't even started walking the woods. hear over radio they are starting to walk. minutes later my buddy spots a yote feet from a group of turkeys just watching them. my buddy tried to sneak up and get shot and spooked it.... several minutes go by and i see my dad approching tree line and he comes to stand next to me. minutes later i hear, 'tanner coyote between us 20 feet from me!" on the radio... coyote runs into field he takes a shot and i take two. out of the corner of my eye i see hogs coming out where i saw the first enter the woods... 4-5 of them come out and i lock on a black and white spotted hog and start letting the 6.8spc bullets fly... first shot was just under it, then i send a few more, last one i pulled the trigger and it looked like the hog fell or we just lost sight of it, wasn't sure. my dad said "did you really just hit that thing?" i replied i have no idea. two more rounds left and i spent em aiming for a all black hog and missed... these guys were on the run anywhere from 400-500 yards, i'll go back sometime and try to confirm but it was FAR . i spent 10 rounds and brian spent 18... so the next question is who shot the hog.... after finding the bullet in the hogs exiting side shoulder i figured out it was a 6.8 round... 400+ yards on a 175lb pig(weighed him) with a 110 grain Hornady V-Max... i'm sure some luck was involved but a dead hog is a dead hog!
gave the meat to the guy on far right, he fosters children and has for a while, he always loves getting meat...

most say 400 yards is kinda pushing it for the 6.8 for stopping power, i say let em fly!

A hunt based on only trophies being taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be,time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there. -Fred Bear

i may try for a axis doe in the morning with it! we'll see how that pans out, wish i had some different ammo on me but the Hornady Vmax took that hog down.
