Okay, someone tell me how you cover the seed you throw out in your newly disced food plot. I am talking about a 2.5 acre plot so please don't say a rake. Anyone know of a simple way to make a harrow for covering the seed?

What seed are you covering? An old gate will work. Piece of cattle panel or chain link fence will do also. Need some chain to attach to whatever you drag and something for added weight.

I use chainlink fence with some 2" pipe wired on for weight, works just fine.

I would skip a food plot this year completely, unless you have irrigation or can water it weekly.

He is right about the water. The ones we planted last year wilted and died. Most seed is small. As a general rule, there should only be dirt over the seed equal in depth to the thickness of the seed.

we use a chain link fence that is weighted with a 4x4x6 piece of wood (kinda heavy) the chain link fence is about 8 feet long. We pull behind a 4 wheeler and secure with some 3/8 heavy duty double braid rope. The rope is secured at each end on the wood and we secure to the 4 wheeler on the trailer ball

We broadcast seed with a tractor

I use a 6'x6' piece of chain link fence that I have attached to a 6' long piece of telephone pole. I stapled the tractor side of the fence to a 6' long piece of 4x4 that has two eye bolts screwed into it. To attach, I just run a 15' long piece of heavy duty chain with a hook on each end to each eye bolt and drop the chain over the hitch ball on my lift arms. I used the same set up with my truck to smooth my driveway before I bought my tractor.

We got half an inch on friday,planted about 4-5 acres of oats on saturday then the rains came AGAIN!We just pull a spreader behind 4 wheeler then disc it in.Works like a charm.saves time and fuel.

We got another half on saturday so 1" total according to my super-accurate 5 gallon bucket rain guage,The area just west of us towards the 'ville got another downpour today,I will learn to post pics.I just hope they don't sprout and then go dry.The thing about discing last puts the seed down a little deeper,I don't know if thats good or bad but it has always worked in the past.We're still feeding cows out the back of a truck but there is a little grass sprouting up after 2 days-amazing,it's the grass that is blue green and looks like a native bermuda with the tall fronds or head.It lies dormant and with a good soaker comes right back up.
