Im hunting on my lease in Liberty county and walking through the lease today ( 08/30/2011), I notices the bucks are already beginning to make scrapes and in the scrape is both, male urine and male poop. Why are they scraping and making it active so early??? Their horns still have velvet on them!!!

Please let me know ASAP because Im hoping this isnt bad news for the season.

welcomeNot unusual at all for some bucks to make scrapes year round. It probably is a buck that has shed his velvet already. How do you know it was male urine and male poop?

Please say you didn't take a sample and have it checked for xy chromosomes.

Bucks and does will both mark active scrapes.

The rut in some areas of central Texas will kick off in October. So active scrape activity in September should be expected.

well i caught him on video on my game cam, and ive only seen one doe in the area versus 4 bucks. I have also heard that doe have more droppings and bucks are more solid ( not sure if this is true or not)

I used to think this as well....until I visited my first deer breeding facility. I was in one of the doe-only pens and it was FULL of "buck poop". LOL!!

I believe it has more to do with maturity than sex....I think mature deer have more clumpy droppings, with younger deer having pellets most of the time.

I'm sure diet also has a lot to do with it. But I will leave the research of that particular subject to the professionals. I do have a BS degree.....but that stands for "Bachelor of Science"....not "Bachelor of Sh*t". grin

IMO it does not have much to do with age but more of the diet. The higher the protein in the diet or legume plants or forbes the more likely they are going to be clumpy instead of pellets. The more fiber or browse in the diet the more likely they are going to look like pellets. Just what I have seen in the past.

Kinda like it is OK to be behind a cow that has been eating dry grass, but it gets a little thinner when they are in the feed lot or eating pear.
