Been lookin at light weight pack axes and it looks like the Gerber and Buck pretty much dominate the market.

Anyone have any experience with these two??
Anyone have any other suggestions??

It needs to be as light as possible, but I aint too crazy about the plastic handles on these things. Not sure how well that would hold up to the constant impact of choping stuff.

For sure the Gerber but not the back pack. We had the larger one and the compact one side by side clearing brush. It was amazing just how much better the blade quality/sharpness/handle length did for being able to actually chop things.

My dad has had it for 10 years or so and if you wanted to chop down a large tree you could get it done for sure. Not sure what was so wrong with the back pack axe my buddy had but it was pathetic in comparison.

As far as the plastic handle it is built solid and it should serve you well and save weight at the same time.
Have no idea how the buck compares.

I like Gerber but out of all my knives the Bucks will hold a edge way longer than the Gerber every will. Bucks are easier to sharpen as well.

Oh and if you look real close on the Gerber it's made by Fiskars. Gerber just puts their name on it.

I hate Gerber products. I bought a pair of Gerber shears a couple of years ago and they broke the first time I used them. I bought a Gerber camp ax and that was the wimpes thing I have ever tried to use. I am sorry but an ax has to have some heft to it and the plastic handle wimpy head of a Gerber just don't get it done as far as I am concerned. Buy you areal camp ax, an Estwing.

I just got the SOG FastHawk and love it! Super sharp and really light. It will definitely be going on my Colorado mule deer trip.

I wanted to love my Gerber camp hatchet, but on the first trip with in 5-10 strikes on a limb, the head sheared off and flew some feet with considerable force! Dangerous to say the least! My next camp ax/hatchet will not be a Gerber unless I can be convinced they have improved. My experience was approximately 4-5 years ago.

Not for sure what you want this for, but I use a Gerber Gator Machete and love it--
http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-22-41576-Gator-Machete-Sheath/dp/B000Q9BBZI

I use this for trail clearing and it will take down anything up to 5 inch in diameter trees--just depends how long you want to wack at it. Most 2" diameter and less trees only take one wack.

I used some chinese POS from academy I got for $10 and it snapped in half in a couple minutes and got dings in it after cutting down small trees.

The Gerber gator has cleared hundreds of small trees and some medium sized ones without any visible damage or dulling of the blade. For $20, I am VERY impressed. If you want something that's cheap, this is the way to go for an all around outdoors utility tool(if you're not stuck on hatchets). Look at Esee blades if you want top quality and don't mind the cost. If you MUST have a hatchet, I'd go with gerber.

another vote for a Fiskars oh I mean Gerber. Here is the one I have. Three years of good hard use and it is holding up well and I have had to Sharpe about once a year. It a good size not to small but not to large. Bes camp I have used was a old boyscout hatchet put on a 3/4 size axe handle. Light and longer handle. Much more useful than a hatchet and was lighter than an axe.

I actually already have that same machete. I like it I am just looking for something for bigger limbs and trees and spliting small logs.
