I have a 3 yr old lab that I have tried many times to get ahold of a duck. Apparently I lost my mojo for duck hunting when I moved off to college. I need some help with getting my pup to get a duck. She has amazing ball drive and will fetch a mallard dummy with no problem. I let her chase a duck that I was going to get mounted but decided not too. She wasn't to sure about the actual duck. I was wondering if anybody has a place around San Marcos, Tx that I can RESPONSIBLY hunt on and have some 1 on 1 training without the pressure of having friends around who think that my pup should just be able to do it the first time. Or I would be happy to hunt with somebody who has a dog that my dog can learn off of.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Or if anybody is willing to help me train her on their property (because i live in an apt.) where their aren't distractions. I would also be grateful for any suggestions on how to get her ready with limited resources.

Try contacting these folks to see if hey have members anywhere nearby who may be willing to assist you.

http://www.hotrc.org/index.htm

Doubt if anyone is going to invite you to join them for a hunt with an untrained Lab. However, you have two months before the general waterfowl season begins and if you can control your dawg with basic obedience commands, then starting a crash course on field handling and the conditioned retrieve might be possible. Sounds like you may need some basic training at the same time, no rudeness intended.

Good luck.

You may want to PM TexasEd. He belongs to a dog club around Austin, which isnt't that far from you in San Marcos.

Thanks Cappy and Hopedale I'll get right on that and see what I can do. Any advice on what to do when I get her out their and actually see a duck(I've been on a bad streak past couple of times she was with me.)

I am thinking that this dog needs some "real bird" training. Get a pigeon and do some basic training with it. Maybe some of these other dog guys can be more specific in exactly what to do. Try tieing a wing to your mallard dummy.

JMS ... I promise that the following is meant constructively and not as a personal criticism of you ...

YOU are as untrained as your Lab. I was going to recommend your getting a good beginners training book and following it from the very beginning. However, you really need someone to mentor YOU so it doesn't end up with the "blind leading the deaf" so-to-speak. That's why I recommended a HRC where experienced members can assist you. An alternative would be to find a pro trainer in your area who would be willing to try training a three year old Lab AND allowing you to watch and maybe assist.

There are thousands of owners who decide the month or two before season to try to get "magic potions" for their adult dawgs to convert them into reasonably satisfactory meat dawgs for the next few months, and then allow them to languish again for another year.

This Retriever training business is a virtual full time job for both teacher and student. YOU have to learn HOW to teach and train before expecting your dawg to learn from you (at least the good things). Then it takes time, effort and dedication pretty much year-around to condition a dawg and teach them the fundamentals of basic obedience right on through more intricate remote handling methods and techniques.

Having said that ... there's nothing wrong with having an 11 month-a-year family pet that can go out with you and fetch up birds during the season. Not every Lab is or needs to be a field trial champion. But you at least need to invest in a training book and seek local assistance from experienced trainers ... and the HRCs are among the better ways of doing just that.

Cappy, no offense intended here either, but where in the world did you get your information on me? Have we met? Have you seen my lab work? I have been working with labs for close to 20 years now, and am fully aware of the work that is involved. I have been involved with HRC's for the whole 20 years, although not here lately. How do you know that a month before bird season opens that I suddenly decide to start training my dog to retrieve? I train 365 days a year, sport! I am wondering if you maybe have misidentified someone here. In case you didn't read my posts, I AGREED with you in your suggestion on this man contacting the HRC. Do you want to borrow my Mike Lardy cd? or any of the other books and cd's that I have been studying for the last 20 years? Maybe you need to know what you are talking about before you tell someone they are as untrained as their lab.
I think the same applies to you and your manners, sport!
Sir, I am 63 years old and have probably killed more birds than you have ever seen in your months of experience.
Get your facts straight BEFORE you make comments like this. You picked the wrong person, sport!

Oops I think Cappy meant to address clint623 but put JMS.

I could be wrong. I have been before but its the only thing that seems to make any sense.

JMS ... Kindall was absolutely correct. Somehow I mistakenly addessed that to you rather than clint623.

So ... "sport", accept my apologies ... I'm only 7 years older than you at age 70 and have been training my own dawgs for 55+ years but hopefully will never get so old that I can't admit to having made a simple mistake. How about you ... sport? You could have simply asked if I really meant to address my post to you but you are entitled to go off on me if it made you feel better.

BTW ... you would definitely not want to get into a career bird killing totals contest with me, Sport.

I really don't think everyone has the time or thought to ask on every single post whether or not it is intended for you, but I understand your mistake and accept your apology willingly.
I bet I run a close 2nd in the bird kill dept. Been doing this quite awhile myself. Hope to run into you someday.

One way to settle this, I will allow each party to take me to their honey hole for a hunt. Best dog/Most birds wins. Who wants to go first?
