A buddy of mine want to sell his shot gun. 11-87 12ga with a 23 inch barrel. How much different will it shoot compared to a 28 bbl? I'm uneducated on this aspect. I think I can get a good deal on it but the barrel length has me concerned. It would become my primary dove gun.
Thanks SAC

If you can get used to the feel it won't affect anything worth worrying about.

Barrel length has nothing do with how much further you can shoot. The 28inch barrel in my opinion with swing better that the shorter 23 inch. But it's just what feels right to you. Some people like 26 over 28.

So its just a matter of feel and swing? He's letting me shoot it for a few weeks, so I'll give it plenty of work. Thanks

It's not the length of your barrel, it is what you do with it

Thanks SAC The 23" barrel was first marketed by Remington in the Special field model in 1994. It has been all 21" before that and as far as I can tell, from 1995 forward until it was discontinued. That's in the Wingmaster 870s, 1100s and 11-87s. Theey were made in both 2-3/4" and 3" chambers. For an upland hunter over dawgs, the 870 SF model is arguably the best fast-pointing and easy-to-carry-all-day repeater ever produced. The waterfowler who does a lot of pass shooting needs a longer sighting plane for the crossing or overhead shots at 40 yards+. The quail, dove or teal hunter who is presented with closer shots at very fast moving targets will LOVE the shorter SF barrel. That's precisely why they were made. I had all three models at various times over the years and only had problems with the 11-87, which I called my "jamomatic". It did not handle light dove or quail loads well. What kind of shape is the 11-87 in and how much is your buddy asking for the gun? There was a 20 ga 870SF in the classifieds here for under $500 last weekend. For reference purposes, that was (is)a steal IMO.
