Anyone knows of a good guide/private place to hunt snipe and woodcock?
I want to go after them this year. I assume woodcocks are best east texas, while snipe could be found north,east,dentral and south texas. But i want to find an outfitter who kind of specialises in these 2 species.

I am not aware of anyone that guides either. Woodcock have a three bird limit and few hunters who even know they exist, I can't see it being lucrative to a guide. There is one in Louisiana doing guided Woodcock hunts that I saw advertised, nice lodge and all, but crazy expensive.

An outfitter with Snipe, is going to have waterfowl. Waterfowl will be where their money is and IMHO the nature of Snipe hunting would conflict with that.

Both are mostly untapped for public land. Scout and find an area with either, you will likely have it to yourself for the rest of season and it is free.

I have never heard of anyone that guides for either in Texas. If you are interested I can put you in touch with a guy that hunts woodcocks in the deep east Texas area with dogs on public land. They normally get into a lot of birds and I would think he might take you if you offered him money.

I will start with my dovefield 10 minutes from cabellas that i know of holds 10 or so snipes every year depending on the cold fronts. Most of them snipes start to show up when you hear the first snowgeese migrate early november to mid november. I am always confused if you are ok to use lead on these snipes, you very often hunt them on muddy fields in proximity of a tank, i called the gamewarden to ask him, but he thought it was ok to use lead, the other guy said steel, to be safe, i will use stealshot number 7. Nowadays its not easy to find nr 7 or 7 1/2 loads that will say steel on the box or on the shelves, but sometimes they have them at cabellas. Last year i hunt duck at the same time than snipe on the way back to the truck, its perfectly legal to after both species on the same time, i was checked by a gamewarden on my way back to the truck, he thought i had some fun with killdees, but luckely i had 3 dead jacksnipe to show him wrong...

Lead is still legal for Snipe, but as stated you would not want to use lead if your also hunting waterfowl. And some public hunting areas are steel shot only for snipe.

I see a lot of em on the WMA here late in the season. Fun to hunt yes, taste better than dove no. I use lead but don't mix waterfowl hunting and snipe then get caught with lead in ur pocket.

I agree with the post about snipe being underutilized on public land. I've found they are a great option for public because they are still moving later in the morning after you're pretty much done with the waterfowl hunting. Once I'm done waiting for my spoonie limit, I'll replace my duck loads with Winchester Xpert Steel and start looking to jump some snipe on the way back to the car. Not only are they pretty challenging because of their size, but they taste as good, if not better, than dove. Good hunting!

They eat mullet in Florida. That dont mean that I will. Lol. I've never had snipe though, so I can't say it's good or not. For that matter, I've never had mullet either. Lol!!!

What do these snipe look like?

Snipe are no good ... not very many, low limits, hard to hit, no place to hunt them, and they taste horrible. All of you guys should avoid all snipe hunting, and definitely stay away from any places that have good snipe habitat.

Snipe are very easy to hit, you can jump them on your wy to you car on muddy fields, if you miss them, you get a second or third chance, they will go down after 100 yards or so, and they still tastebvery good, thet limit is 8 per day, so more limit than duck...

Where would one run into these snipes?

I see a lot every year I am duck hunting but never bother with them because I dont want to spook any incoming birds.

Yup! Just like any other migratory... they tend to keep to the shorelines & wetlands though.

Think my dog will fetch those things?

NO! Take my word for it ... don't listen to that beaversnipe. Trust me, you guys should all just stick with ducks and geese.
