Yes it does. Ryegrass is also good, not as good as oats but it is easier to plant.

I have a spot around my water troughs that always stays damp. I planted some green beans there and they grew like crazy. Do you have any suggestions of what to plant in that area?
I was thinking about planting rye grass in the rest of that field. It is pretty dry out there and I don't want to spend too much money.

I would still go with Oats, feed oats, not the seed, they are cheaper, but not "guaranteed" The rye is a little more for seed last time I bought some for a new pond dam, but deer will eat the oats hands down over rye in my experience. Of course in this drought, they'd probably eat the leather off a saddle too.

The soil type where you hunt is a huge factor in what to plant. Wheat, turnips and rye will grow better in sandy type soils. Oats, in my experience, don't do as well in dryer soil types. If you are getting plenty of rainfall in the fall, they will all work well, especially oats. I don't think you'll have a deer turn their nose up at anything green in the fall or winter, though...especially in this kind of drought.

Call the feed store closer to where you hunt. I am plating turnips as I Got about 20lbs in sample product from one of my seed vendors.
What city do you live in?
