I have noticed in the past year or so that hunting prices for especially exotics has gone down. I wonder if the same is going to happen to whitetail hunting.

I think it is as simple as suply and demand. There are alot more people out there offereing exotic hunts these days and I think that is what is keeping the prices for them low. I dont see white tail hunting following it as it is too regulated.

I am to upside down on feed to be offering too many discounts.
That being said, I have 0 hunts booked for this season. Who knows? Things are tough all over.

There is a lot of competition. Our prices went up. We have more customers than what we have had in the last two years so far this year.
I am low for the for this last part of the season, but nothing really out of the ordinary for this time of year. I already have had a great deal of hunts this year and I have lots of people calling about hunts. People are just not booking way out in advance this year for me. So far its been hunters booking two weeks to two months out in advance. This time of year people are thinking whitetails and exotics slow down for us. It picks up a lot in late December to March for us.

WE;ve slowed some on exotics, but still doing some. Feed is not real bad down south, but it's killing me in whitetail country out west.

I don't see how some are selling exotics, especially axis for less than you can get them at the auctions or game traders. I will probably not have any whitetail hunters this year. I have not got carried away with feeding and the quality is way down. I am probably spending over $300 per month on feed and with what I charge I could not even break even so the heck with it. Hopefully next year with be better. I had one of my Ibex die today, I think one of the bigger ones hooked him in the belly and punched a hole in his gut. If it ain't the lack of rain it's something else.

I think feed prices plus drought,or I should say because of drought.People pinching pennies, the heat, high gas prices etc.etc.ad nauseum.

If I could only spend $300 a month on feed I'd be really happy! The dry weather has the ponds dry as a bone and the only water source we have is our water well. I'm going through about $450 a week right now.
I'm just not buying any exotics and stocking more than what I need. Even though I have hunters, its been hard to get them and I have had to advertise more and in different places to be successful. We just about sold all of the cull hunting that I want to do last year. I have a fallow or two to sell this year still and maybe one or two red deer hinds later this fall, but right now I'm pretty busy with just axis and blackbuck trophy hunts.

I am just feeding enough to keep everything alive. I think the only reason auction prices have remained up is because there always seems to be someone new who has decided to stock their ranches. I laid a water line from the house out a ways into the pasture and put a trough there plus I haul water to he back.If we don't get any rain in about the next 3 weeks it is going to be a long winter. Even if it does rain I don't know how much of the vegetation will come back. A lot of it is dead and you don't get many forbs growing in the winter.

Yes it does, but I'm getting enough hunters to pay for it. We have only had to start feeding alfalfa about the middle of June. We had enough green with the little bit of rain we did get to suffice with the animal population. But where you guys are at I would imagine its a lot worse.
It may change with the next load of alfalfa that I have to get. I am gettig some really high quotes on a trailer load right now. The highest I have seen yet is $400 a ton. I can get a ton of 17% protein for under $360 so there is a limit on what I can spend on alfalfa and justify the cost.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. The window for any possible new forbes growth is closing fast out in the hill country. That, and much of my smaller browse trees are starting to look poor as the heat continues with no rain.

I speak from a hunter's perspective. And let me tell you... IT ISN'T GOOD!
We had entertained the thought of an exotic hunt prior to 2 years ago.
THEN: 401k tanked, laid off TWICE with no recall, on furlough now and hoping to be back under contract this week. I burned through 50 grand of savings just staying afloat the past 2 years. Factor in 1 major surgery, Mom and Dad's funerals, and a wedding. It's a wonder I still have a roof under my head. I have recorded over 1200 applications for work and just one callback. I guess I am not bilingual enough to dig ditches and 40 is too old for most employers to give consideration. But, when you are one of 2000 applicants the odds are slim anyway. (Thank the Lord I landed that job, now furloughed!)I just keep hunkering down 'ere the stones raining down on my head become boulders.
Three years ago, we pulled in a nice 6 figure income. The past 2 years we have scraped by on 1/3 of that.
Hunting? Well lets put it this way... if lead shot was banned in Texas this year, I could scratch dove and quail off the list. Last year's ammo is the only thing that is keeping me in the game at all this year. Next year... I try to keep a positive outlook. Exotics, well that just got pushed back at least another 3-5 years.
I hope things get better for all of us, as hollow and futile as that feels right now.

I feel economy, weather, and feed prices are driving some prices down right now. I hope, but doubt, it will happen with lease prices

What? You don't think lease prices will follow? Price point has been reached.

What are lease price per acre nowadays? In the mid 1980s we paid $5/acre for a 2000 acre lease in commanche cty. Just curious since we own our own property and haven't had a lease since 1989

I think many who only start going to their leases starting in Sept. to start feeding and working on stands are going to be shocked. They are going to want some of their money back after they see what the deer look like.

Economy is curtailing my hunting on all fronts. If it wasn't for my Nephews wanting to hunt then my passion for hunting would have been extinguished years ago. There is no lease or package hunts on the horizon. TPWD drawn hunts are our ownly avenue. Ammo is almost like gold in percantage of value rising.

It just amazes me that there are still lots of outfitters asking $10000+ for elk hunts. I would not give $10000 for all the elk in the western hemisphere!!

What is tellling is not just the number of leases that are open, but the ones that are missing members with the remaining guys picking up the extra costs. It will be much worse next year. I'd be looking for late firesale deals here in the next few weeks. If the landowners were smart, they'd do a single season low price with an option for a 2nd or third year along with a deposit situation to hold the lease for the next year. Win win for everybody.

Myself.. I day hunt..allocate myself about $2000 a year for all hunting..and usually get a few animals... Deer, Hogs, Turkey.. some varmints.. Works for me.. Leasing seems to be very expensive but if you had a dsecent year round lease 2-3 hours from home with some good guys. I might do it.

Some one in a booth at the hunters extrazaganza was telling me their prices were lowered do to wanting to remove the animals before new law goes into effect. Said it was some law where all the owners or exotics would have to have a permit (fees) to own and sell hunts for exotics. He left me with the impression that this was going to cause most folk to get rid of their exotics since the fees will be so high. Any trueth to this?

He is probably referring to the law regarding the scimitar horned oryx. I have not heard of any immediate danger from a proposed law which you speak of and I checked with a few people that would and they say there is nothing right now other than the issue dealing with scimitar, addax, and the dama gazelle. I don't doubt that is what anti's would probably want to try to do anyway. Anything to stop any form of hunting is what they want to do. But I have not heard of anything in the manner you speak of.
