Hey Y'all,

My son is telling me that I need to get ready for duck season. he is buying a boat and has his dog in training right now. I was wondering what call or calls I should get so I can start practicing. I want to surprise him when we go hunting with my 'expertise' on duck calling. lol He works out of town alot so I want to get the call(s) and start working on them so I can awe him with my skills! lol Any advice would be appreciated! Haydel's Double Reed Mallard. Thats what my first call was and is still one of my favorites.

Its a feeding call.. it makes a noise that gets ducks excited. They do not make it in the wild but it adds something different when working birds.

Get a whistle and a easy to blow double reed that doesn't require much air at all. Work your way to a single reed later. I like duck commander calls. You'll get alot of different responses here.

I am a Haydel's man. There are several in expensive calls out there to buy. Haydels has several the DR-85 is one. The Duck Commander Brown sugar is another. You can also go look at some Buck Gardner calls. They usually have some instructional videos to go with them. Just find one that you are comfortable with.

I use my teal whistle to signal my dog.. and it works. Just throwing that out there.

Buck Gardner Double Nasty...Its an economical choice that has a great raspy sound...

Just check out any double reed call because most of them are very easy to blow and sound good. Search youtube for the call you buy and there will be fellow hunters giving instructions on how to blow the call in the best way.

If I were you, I'd look into a double reed QuackHead call. They are available at Academy or online. They're inexpensive, easy to blow and sound good.

JMHO, If you really plan on getting into duck hunting, you might as well start with a single reed. It's much easier to learn to blow a single reed than migrate over from a double later.

You can do anything a double will do with a single, but not everything a single will do with a double.

Go to a calling contest and see how many in the "Meat Duck" category are using double reeds.
