350. How much money are you going to spend? You can get a basic Goodwrench 350 longblock for around $1600. Believe your intake, accessories and carb will just swap over. Never messed with a 305 though.

Comes with GM warranty.

I've heard 2 barrel carbs on 350 will get you decent mileage, never tried it. If you want a four barrel for power, quadrajets and stock intake manifolds are pretty cheap and easy to find.

yep, go with the 350, and the 2 barrell will work just fine as long as you keep the 350 stock. everything should bolt right up and work just fine.

When you get that engine replaced, either way you go, use the following link to set-up the timing on it. it will run much better and get better mpg's than if you just stick the distributor in it and set the static timing. I use this same method and it works way better than the way GM did it when they were trying to dodge emissions during that era.

Another very important note. Read the following link, understand it, and take it to heart. Oils have changed a lot over the last decade or so, and not for the better on the older flat tappet hydraulic engines. It's all explained in this thread, and there are plenty more write-ups about it all over the web. proper break-in and using the right oil will make all the difference in the life of the new engine. If you are not doing this work yourself, make sure whatever mechanic you use understands this, or you are just going to get an engine you will have problems with. And if proper break-in and oils aren't used, no-one will warranty the motor.

You can also find newer 5.3 chevys with everything you need for around that price and you will have fuel injection...
