I was cleaning out my grandmothers house after she passed and came across a Presto pressure cooker. 6 quart, cooked pintos last Sunday in 45 minutes and they were awesome. Anyone else ever use these culinary marvels? I am now looking for stuff to put in this pot

Grew up listening to the sound of Mom's pressure cooker popping away. Sure would like a bowl of her black-eyed peas. Thanks for the memories.

I love Cuban black beans made in the pressure cooker and served over white rice! I like recipes that use small amount of cumin, sugar and white vinegar (or red wine vinegar) to get the flavor right. Also, onions, green pepper, pork belly (salt pork or good bacon), a bay leaf, and a couple of cloves of fresh minced garlic. Fry up the pork and veggies in a little olive oil right in the uncovered pressure cooker till translucent; add the water and overnight soaked beans with the sugar, vinegar, a little pepper, bay leaf and cumin.

I've got two. One for beans, roasts, soups and whatnot. The other is for menudo, and tamales.
It's great for making gravy for a roast.

Not only are they fast, they can make a tough cut of meat fork tender. I'm surprised they aren't more prominent than they are.

The old game warden where I grew up was always talking about cooking bream and carp in a pressure cooker. Said they cooked the meat right off the bones then they canned it. I never got a chance to try it.

I threw a smoked hock in with the beans, in 50 minutes it had fallen apart and even the rind was tender. I am going to try a roast tonight I think.

They make a damn good roast. I like to brown the meat a little more than normal when using a pressure cooker. I pour a little peanut oil in a cast iron skillet and give it a good searing on high heat.

I use the pan drippings mixed with a packet of brown gravy mix. You talk about good!!! Serve it with mashed potatoes and collard greens. MMMMMMmmmmmmmmm!!! I can't wait for winter to come along. I can't eat roast when it's this hot.

When doing a roast, after you sear it on both sides, add a couple of cups of water and seal the lid and let cook for about an hour. Release the steam, add peeled potatoes and carrots and let her rip for about 20 minutes.
Remove everything except the liquid. Bring it back to a boil and start adding a little flour at a time. It makes real good gravy.

That sounds good. I wish I could get my wife to using the pressure cooker more. She said she's scared of it.

I've got to dig ours out now. I got my mother's pressure cooker many years ago and tried it on pintos a couple of times and turned them to mush. Maybe I over cooked them. After reading all of this I've to give this another shot.

I had a friend one time who's mother would cook some kind of roast in one and about the time it was nearly done she would shred it up and add BBQ sauce to it. It was great!!

The pintos are a 45 minute deal, I have done it 3 times and yet to turn them to mush. 2' of water above the beans, high heat till it percolates then turn to medium. Give it a whirl!

I broke down and cooked an arm roast in the pressure cooker tonight. Absolutely delicious and tender as barbacoa. We had a salad from the garden and fresh lima beans with butter and salt. MMMMMmmm!

I have been pretty careful to check the valve on mine, I am getting to be a wizard with this thing. I can't wait to do some "cold weather " dishes with it

Safety plug blew out on Mom's when I was a kid. UNGUIDED MISSILE
