I lucked out and drew a muzzle loader Mule Deer tag in unit 2C in NM this year. My hunt dates are the first in that unit. I have been in that area some but never hunting. If anyone has any insight for that area I would appreciate any help I can get. I will be hunting the last of Sept. I plan to do whatever it takes to get into the deer. I'm waiting to hear back from the local wildlife folks about whether that unit was affected by the recent fires.

2c looks to be in NW corner of state Towns of Bloomfield and Nageezi Correct. The Jicarilla borders 2C all along the East side of the unit if that helps. San Juan river makes up part of the N.West border of 2C

If that's the case I have hunted in that area numerous times. But the last time was probably 10 years ago. When we first started going there we went in through Co. at Pagosa Junction. The last time they had put a lock on the gate and had to go in through N.M. near Dulce. Used to be good hunting. Saw and shot at the widest mule deer buck I had ever seen. Lot of wild horses in that area.

That was my philosophy when applying for New Mexico. Go Big or Go Home!!! I am really looking forward to it and trying to stay realistic but I know in the back of my mind that there are some true monsters in that area. I am not sure on the outfitter thing right now. I have had really good luck on DIY I just have not spent much time in this area other than driving through. If I can find a little info on access that will help me alot.

When I went we always hunted the Cracus mesa where it dropped off toward the Jicarilla. Saw good bucks every time we went. Did not always get them but that's what made it fun.

TxTechsan..do some good research though as this unit is easy to get lost in while driving on the gas well service roads. The outfitter I use in that unit has lived in the area all his life and knows exactly where to go to find a shooter buck. You could drive all day and glass around and not be in the right area. I know, cause I did it before and was frustrated.

don k, the area you are referring to is actualy in Unit 2B right on the Colorado line down south to I believe 64, east border is the Jicarrilla near Dulce and the west border is just the other side of Lake Navarro. Both really good units. I would say unit 2C is actually the better unit all the way through hunting season. Unit 2B has the Carson National Forest on the East Side as well.

Check if any of the area has had any forest fires, there has been a lot of them this year, just like Texas, New Mexico has had a bad year for fires. Some national forests are also closed to all activity. Hopefully that will change with the July and early August rains.

Oops, my mistake.Anyway it was good hunting. The last time I was there it had really changed. There were wells everywhere.
