1.5 years in East Texas. Like he said. It depends on where he is, accidents, does he have vet. help available, his diet, predators, how old did his parents live, does he have a history of heart problems, does he use protection during the rut, does he limit sexual activity during the rut or go crazy like the rest of the bucks. Too many variables to put a definite answer to your question.

In the wild they have the potential to live 11 to 12 years if they can avoid hunters. The average lifespan is more likely 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years due to hunting pressure. In most of the whitetails world their teeth will be completely worn down by 7. I have seen a few old bucks and they look pretty rough.

Depends on the region of the state and the area in that region they live in. Oldest documented buck was over 20+ yrs old on the Jambers Ranch for a wild born buck. Not uncommon to see bucks 10+ yrs on larger lightly hunted ranches around the state that have a good habitat or feeding programs. Hunting pressure is the biggest limit on age for most bucks.

We've had deer older then 9 years come through our shop. The average age is 4 to 5 but especially the South TX deer can be much older. One of the deer was so old he hardly had any teeth left. Judged him to be about 12. How he lived that long is anyone's guess and he still had a very nice rack.

Once a deer passes the age of 7 or 8 or so you can not judge his age very well if he is on native range, unless you have seen him for most of his life and can put an age on him that way. To say a deer is 10 or 12 from his teeth will not work IMO it just is a guess. Throw in food plots and protein feed and it is next to impossible to age a deer by tooth eruption and wear.

I agree with your statement on aging a deer judging by his teeth. That particular buck however was very well known on that place and had been spotted for many years without anyone ever getting a shot at it. That's how they made the determination on the old age. And with any wild animal if you don't witness the birth and keep records it is always a guess.

There are records of deer being killed on the King Ranch that are 9 years old, who knows there may be some out there older than that.

i saw a buck one year that I would bet was in his tenth year.
saggy skin, droopy red eyes, little 8 point rack, poor thing walked like he had arthritis.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Depends on his rack and where he's at. And whos hunting him!
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

Buddy of mine dropped a spindly horned 10 pt in Kansas that had large pedecals and a huge body, field dressed at 275. Put him on the game cart and it busted the spokes out in the first 20 yds. Charlie and Tony had to use the cart like an un-wheeled gurney to get him out of the Kansas river bottom. Just like stated above saggy old skin and tired old eyes. I am guessing 8-10 and what was amazing he was chasing a doe the best he could anyway! When they hoisted him up in the garage his back hoofs were up in the rafters and his nose on the ground.

This is one of the oldest bucks I have seen in the wild. He was a very mature 6x6 when I first saw him. This pic of him was the 3rd yr that I had seen him. My "guess" on his age was 10+ but he was never shot that I know.
