I just got done posting a picture of a hog on the web site that I am building. The shooter estimates the weight to be over 400 lbs. How do you get a good estimate on a hogs weight? Texas Wild Boar Picture

Get you a set of hanging scales.

100% wild hogs that weigh 400 are hard to come by and you ever notice how every big pig taken by someone who only kills a few a year weighs 400, just saying. Ive seen them on scales that go 400 but anytime I hear that I am suspicious.

he is big and might have gone 400 but somewhere in the 300lb range would be a more realistic guess, but I agree with cmc and big-tex get a good scale takes the guess work out

I've seen a couple of true 400lb wild hogs in all of my years of hunting and they are few and far between. We catch and sell a lot of hogs every year so we get to see hundreds or thousands of hogs that other people have caught as well.
That's a good size hog for sure but I don't think he'd hit close to 400. He's just not thick enough.

From the TB web site: Quick reference estimate of a hog's weight. Formula used to estimate: Heart girth is measured in inches using a cloth measuring tape. The tape is placed directly behind the front legs, wrapped snugly around the heart girth, and read directly behind the shoulders. pig weight = 10.1709 x Heart girth (inches) minus 205.7492. Found to be 95% accurate to within 10 lbs Using the above formula, we get the following: 40 inch = 200 pounds 42 inch = 220 pounds 43 inch = 230 pounds 44 inch = 240 pounds 45 inch = 250 pounds ------------------------------- 46 inch = 260 pounds 47 inch = 270 pounds 48 inch = 280 pounds 49 inch = 290 pounds ----------------------------- 50 inch = 300 pounds 51 inch = 310 pounds 55 inch needed to get around 350 pounds The site is trying to get more factual data on feral hogs as the above measurement may be more geared towards domestics hogs with a different build. http://www.texasboars.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=97

To keep my estimates on par with the online hog weight experts, I usually take whatever I think it weighs and then add 150lbs respectively.

Actually Rebel, you can correctly assess the estimates of others if you know the distance of the drag, slope of the land, and height of the truck bed into which the hog is lifted. The greater the distance, slope up, and bed height, the greater the estimate they will give you. There may be other factors that can come into play such as the depth of the snow, depth of the swamp, or extremes in heat and cold, but you need a Cray for those calculations.
Never mind. Your formula is much easier and is probably just as accurate.

with out scales you can only guesstimate which is only guessing. No way to be precise with out weighing.

A hunt based on only trophies being taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be,time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there. -Fred Bear

To keep my estimates on par with the online hog weight experts, I usually take whatever I think it weighs and then add 150lbs respectively. I for one take the opposite approach. There are just way too many experts at judging the live weight of a dead hog on the internet for me to ever risk embarrassing myself by posting a picture of a hog that I shot, and giving my true personal estimate of it's weight. I always play it safe. My personal formula is as follows: Absolute max guess: X Minus 30%: .70X Minus another 50%: .35X of that for forum credibility So, to simplify, if I shoot a hog that I think could possibly weigh 200 pounds max: My formula gives an internet wide forum safe calculated weight of: A whopping 70 pounds. Works every time, and nobody calls me a braggart for shooting bigger hogs than them. Be cool.
