Two years ago we were much dryer than we are currently and had lots of deer hitting corn. Last year no deer were seen at any feeder. So with the lack of rain will it not be much more likely for deer to be hitting corn especially if the rain stays away?

I would be that deer will hit the feeders harder this year. Last year was harder in a lot of places because the above average rainfall resulted in a bumper crop of acorns.

we have no acorns......deer always come to corn.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

We have nothing but mesquite but the deer didn't hit the feeders very much. Hope this year is different.

Double-edged sword. Deer should come to feeders better this year, but antler growth will likely be less in most areas for those that don't feed protein due to a sorry spring/early summer growing season.

If corn doesn't go sky high again it should be a good year for feeders...

If it don't rain in the fall then what deer are alive in deer season will hammer feeders. If it does rain in late Aug or Sept then it depends on the area you are at as to what happens.

Happy b-day ranchman

I agree, depends on the area. When we hunted the hill country in a wet year you just wouldnt see deer, I would see more walking to and from stand than I did from it all the time, but it seems like on our place down south the deer always need a little bit of a corn fix wether it is green or not. Our deer usualy come to the feeders wether conditions are good or bad. If we have wet fall though the native browse will be out and we will probably see fewer.

To those of you saying you will not shoot a buck this year because antler growth is down. If you see a buck this year 10 inches bigger than what you have ever shot are you telling me you will let him walk just because he could have been a little bigger if we had more rain? I am gonna have to call B.S. on this unless you are hunting inside a pen where you can control everything.

It is sky high now. The high price is due in part to predictions, last month, of a lower harvest. Now they are saying big harvest and lower prices by end of summer. I think it is all just market manipulation.

Corn is a commodity and subject to speculative trading, meaning the price doesn't exactly follow the strictest of supply vs demand rules.

Back to the original topic, I agree we may very well see more deer, especially bucks, around the feeders this year. Antler quality may be down too, but I do recall reading at least one study that found antler quality was pretty good during the first dry year following several wet years. Had something to do with forcing the bucks to change their diet away from their preferred browse over to other sources that resulted in decent antler development.

The fact that China just bought 540,000 metric tons is just pure speculation?

U.S. feed grain supplies for 2011/12 are projected higher this month mostly with higher expected beginning stocks and production for corn. Corn beginning stocks are raised 150 million bushels reflecting changes to 2010/11 usage projections. Corn production for 2011/12 is projected 270 million bushels higher based on planted and harvested area as reported in the Acreage report. Feed and residual use for 2011/12 is raised 50 million bushels with larger supplies and lower expected prices. Corn use for ethanol is raised 100 million bushels with larger supplies and an improved outlook for ethanol producer margins. Exports are raised 100 million bushels mostly reflecting increased demand from China. Ending stocks for 2011/12 are projected 175 million bushels higher at 870 million. The 2011/12 season-average farm price for corn is projected at a record $5.50 to $6.50 per bushel, down 50 cents on both ends of the range.

If he is old enough, 5.5 yr old for me, and he is 10 inches bigger than what I have shot he is going down. If he is younger and bigger he still gets a pass. Not hunting high fence for me either. You have to understand, I pass very big deer every year so this one will be no different.

Agreed. We let a 160-class double drop walk last year in hopes that another year on the protein he might make book, but from the looks of the one picture we have of him this year, he's going to be at least 10 inches below what he was last year, so he'll probably get another ticket to walk. The again, he put on ALLOT of antler, incluiding his drops in the last 2-3 weeks in velvet.
