Just curious, where is that ranch? Is it off of FM 649, going south off of 16, at Randado, between Zapata and Hebbronville? Or is it another San Roman Ranch?

That sounds like the same Deerfeeder. They actually share a gate with the Tecomate.

No it is hf its right around 3k acres. They must be changing there pricing it used to be listed on there instead of the call for pricing that has changed since I was on site last time. I have been impressed with the bone there producing with the drought that they have been in.

Only reason I asked was when I was in the Border Patrol we worked in the area I'm talking about. That San Roman Ranch butted up against the Robert East Ranch, which had humungouse bucks and everything was low fenced back then. Robert East did not hunt his ranch, ever. The far side of Robert East butted up against another ranch, the name escapes me right now, but they were low fenced and barely hunted, and they fronted on FM 1017, out of La Gloria going towards Hebbronville.
San Roman was also where I saw my first live mountain lion.

Robert East never shot or hunted deer on his place...we were just discussing that last weekend... He would rather have his cattle shot before he let one of the deer on his property get harvested...old ranchers in the area claim he placed ranchhands on his fence late at night to watch for poachers

No, I was in Rio Grande City and then went to Customs, as a Special Agent, then McAllen, then two miserable years in DC, back to McAllen, and then to Falcon Dam again, and I retired at 50 with 20 years of gun totin' time, plus 11 years of Navy time.
Spent a lot of time workin' in Zapata before they had a BP Station and back when they had 3 agents. Also worked the lake a lot with the Game Wardens down around Chihuahua and Los Lobos. Caught a lot of dope off that lake.
I still cutsign out here on the ranches though.
edit Robert was strange. He let us work trails on his ranch and yet he wouldn't let the Hebbronville guys on, cuz they took his workers. We'd come up on him sometimes workin' cattle or on a fence with his illegals and he'd dang near look like them. But, he'd tell us what he knew. He had at one time 125 windmills on that ranch and 3 guys he paid royally to maintain them.
I've seen magazine cover bucks on his place that would stand in the middle of the sendero and look at ya like they knew you weren't gonna do anything. And then when they'd put you in their place they'd walk to the fence and crawl under it, just by putting their rack back over their shoulders. Took 4 1/2 hours to travel from the South end to the North and 2 1/2 to go west to east. I learned it over a period of about 6 months, one ranch road at a time. We had several guys get lost on that ranch. Had my first face to face encounter with a javelina on that ranch too. SOB came to the entrance to a burrow he was in and froze me in my tracks. Just as I'd made up my mind to shoot him and was inchin' my hand to the gun, he broke and ran right between my legs. Took me a few minutes to calm down after that.

Good read if you can find one.

Yeah I'm familiar with the east property because my grandpa had some land out there years ago on chihuahua fm road and I used to work the oulfields in that area before I joined the Patrol.

Stxranchman, do you remember what the book is titled?I would love to get my hands on it. X2 I think it was called "The Thorns of Winter" and written in 1992. I seriously doubt you could find a copy of it anymore as there were not many printed the first run. Like 1000 copies if I remember right. It was written in a way that made it seem like hunting but if you read it closely you will catch that it was written from a poaching standpoint.

We actually caught a poacher up there one night. We were maybe about a mile south of Randado, where FM 649 meets Hwy 16. Truck comes by, slows, stops, single gunshot, door opening, voices in Spanish, and we red lighted them. Held them for the game warden, C. Huff, before he climbed up the ladder, he took them in, and by the time we were closing out the shift, their truck was already back in Salineno where they lived. Poaching wasn't treated real seriously back then by some of the local JP's
