A couple of buddies and I are looking at going to Kansas this December for a pheasant hunt. We have been hunting north of Lubbock for the past couple of years with little success and we would like to give Kansas a shot. Any advice on good guides/outfitters would be much appreciated. Thanks

We just go up there and start walking the public land. We see plenty of birds. There are millions of public acres to hunt.

If you are going to hunt public land in Kansas, you better hit it opening day. Opening day pheasant hunt is the biggest draw to kansas every year. Those boys up there scout it hard and hit it harder. I hunt Kansas every year (I am from there) and limit out every time, yes, every time. But, I have tons of buddies up there that do the scouting for me and I have access to literally thousands of acres of private land. If you can find someone/outfitter to take you out, I suggest the Hays, Ks area. You will be blown away with all the birds and deer. It is not uncommon to see 6 to 10 bucks a day that would score 160 plus. Also, you will see some awesome Mule Deer too! If you've never hunted Jack Rabbits, put that on your list to do as well, tons of fun!

I went in December last year and had a good trip. Was able to get up about a dozen birds in a 3 day stretch. And that was hunting solo with 1 dog. So it's not blast away, but it was a good trip IMO. Guys are right though about there being plenty of public access around there.

Let me know if you want to go during the KS deer season. It's cheap and I know a lot of good private stuff.

I'm probably heading up right after gun season on deer closes up there this year. Got plans for the 12-18th up near Smith Center.
