A couple of weeks ago we were down at our ranch, and by chance caught a glimpse of something in the brush and found out it was a deer. Not to far from the tank. Any how he had been dead for at least a couple weeks. I took the head home and am in the process of doing a euro mount of it. I pulled the bottom jaws and I have a few trail cam pics of him, would like to see how old you think he is, and if you want to guess a score go for it. I havent scored him yet, but will soon.

We guessed age at 2.5-3.5 from pictures and seeing him and 3.5 from teeth, I might need to get better pics of the teeth, but here is what Ive got now.
Teeth

Live

I have a couple more pics of him live too, just not with me. Lets hear what you think.

Depending on the area or food type he mostly ate he could be 2.5.

From the amount of dentine visible, it looks like 3 1/2.
Hard to see the lingual crests in the side shots though.

Looking at the last cusp I would say from these pics he is 3.5. The last cusp has to much wear and is flat so that is why I am calling him a 3.5. If that cusp was somewhat pointed with some wear I would say 2.5 or if it was worn toward the outside of the jawbone at an angle I would call him 4.5. Post some better pics and I might change my mind. He looks to be around 125 to 128 from those pics.

Any idea what killed it? Hope it wasn't anthrax, cuz you'll be able to get a bunch more lower jaw bones before too long if it was.

If he was near water, most likely he was wounded - shot or hit by a car. Natural instinct for deer to go to water when hurt!

Well I just finished scoring the deer, wish stxranchman was more right... he only made 112. beams were 19 and 18 and longest point was 6 2/8... maybe its ok he died short tines and beams isnt something you want to keep around. Oh and only 15 1/2 wide.

Man I missed him a bunch then. But at his age he still had lots of growing to do. Might have only been 2.5 also. Get a better pic of the jaw and post it and see if he looks younger. Were his antlers still attached well or do they have hairline cracks at the pedicles? Could be he was injured in late rutting activity and went to water with fever. If they get poked in the gut it takes them about 30 days or so for infections to get them.

THe antlers are still on really good, looks like any other euro ive done. I think he has been dead longer than we thought, the only thing left of the deer was the backbone and head. Im betting he died during late rut maybe. I will try to get some better pictures, all I had at the time was my cell phone cam.

This is the same deer I showed you pictures of before, and we came to the conclusion he was 2.5 then, so maybe so, the teeth just looked more in line with 3.5 going from the book we have, but wear varies from ranch to ranch and diet too. I will try to get some better pictures.
