Ok, I'm going to ask the stupid question. I have a water well within 100 yds of a tank that has been dry for a couple of months. I'm in Laredo and the water is salty. 1) what would be the most economical way to pump the well? 2) am I doing any good filling the tank with salty water?

If it is salty then I would not do it. Just how salty is the water? Water been tested? How deep? Solar pump would be the best way if it is not to deep. If it is shallow might not have enough volume to do what you want to do if not to salty. Might be able to pump it and flow it and it might improve or it could get worse. I have run wells by dropping in a sub. pump on PVC and then running with a generator to fill a water storage tank that fed a trough.

The water I am using in my feed pens is coming from a shallow well run by a soler pump , the water is not fit for human drink but the animals seem to like it fine , the down side is it's low volume pump and only pumps around 300 gal a day on sunny days !

Someone might correct me if I am wrong..but with some solar pumps the pump is the same but to increase volume you add more solar panels. Not sure on this but this is what I have been told.
300 gallons a day will supply a large water storage tank and/or water trough. You could also dig a smaller pit type tank in good clay that will keep the animals happy.

True , the well is on ranch next to me and they let me tie into it to feed my cabin for dishes and shower , I have a 500 gal tank on a 8' tower that gravity feeds into cabin . I fill a 200 gal tote in bed of truck to fill holding tanks at feed pens, when I don't have it valved to my cabin it's running into a small earthen tank for cows but I don't thing it keeps up with evaporation as the earthen tank is drying up ,

Never had it tested, but you can taste the salt, on the parts per thousand scale, I'd say 6-7. Most of the wells on our property are 2-300ft deep, never checked this particular one. How much does the solar setup run.
