it seems to me bucks of all species know when they are not hard horned and resort to kick fights like this. they instinctively protect their velvet. any biologist on here that can confirm this observation?
i have seen several pics like this...

i have seen several pics like this... Bucks will box with box in velvet, doe will box with doe, and I have seen young bucks box with doe in whitetails. Exotic deer species are the same way for the most part. What I have seen is when food supplies are short that they tend to get more aggressive with each other around feed especially around a corn feeder. Usually it is a dominate animal that will box with another aggresive animal. They will "box" and assert dominance to keep other deer off of the feed till they are getting full then eat side by side. Just my observations but someone else maybe able to shed more light on it.
