I saw the first one in 15 years in Dimmit county leaving my property Easter weekend.... I turned my car around as I passed him just in time to watch an 18 wheeler flatten him.

WOW have'nt seen one of those in years, think maybe fireants had something to do with that. We use to play with them for hours.

I used to see them in San Antonio all the time growing up. I've seen a few out here around San Angelo, but not many.

When I was little we use to visit my grandparents in Yorktown and could never walk outside without shoes on because they were everywhere. It's cool every time I see one now.
If you keep your hair short and your mouth shut, things tend to run a lot smoother.

I see them a lot on the lease in Callahan county. Very cool little critters

They are awesome. I haven't seen one in about 25-30 years around here. There were tons of them when I was a kid. Our place in St Hedwig has quite a few red ant mounds and I really thought we'd have some but we've been there about 9 months and have yet to see one.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Used to be thick in Galveston and Brazoria Counties too...played with them as a kid and they really liked my grandfather's garden to hide in.
Had tons of big red ants around that country too back then.

I heard it was teh fire ant population that drove out the food source (red ants) for them. Very cool
