I got up this morning and let our big lab out in the back yard before we went to church. A few minutes later he is bumping around the yard like a bucking bronco or someone taught him to dance. While he is “bucking” he is bending back to bite at something that was supposedly attached to his back leg but isn’t there anymore. So, I brought him in and he lies down and starts licking his back leg just above the paw – what would be a shin to a human. I am thinking snake bite. So while he is down in the kitchen I go outside. Whatever was there is gone now. Return to check the dog and he is still licking the back leg in the same spot. He let me check him out, there wasn’t a mark I could see and there were no fire ants on his leg or between his pads either (I thought that was the other possibility). We watched him closely and he has not shown indications of feeling ill and has quit licking his leg. There seems to be no visible swelling – the spot isn’t so tender he that he won’t let me check it and he is playing with the kids looking quite happy. We live about 200 yards from Ray Hubbard so I am thinking snake but no venom injection ?

In the cool weather this morning, he may have stepped on or flipped up a wasp or bee that was lethargic on the grass.
Have you ever crawled into a box blind on a cool November morning and see wasps half asleep there? BUT, they can sting, as my knee found out when I bumped up against one at around 40 degrees in the dark.
Wasp or bee would be my experienced guess....... I'm sure the dog has already put it behind him.

Hey Guys - thank you for the replies.... We don't have any scorpions around here... lots of wild rabbits and a couple of bobcats and ducks... and moccasins and diamondback water snakes... I have seen the snakes in the yard before but usually only the diamondback water snakes. Our dog appears to be fine.. he is eating and playing and soaking up the extra attention.... he doesn't favor his leg or even indicate that is might hurt... I think the Bee or Wasp explanation might be right on... thank goodness that was all

When my yard dog got bitten by a copperhead, she had two huge holes in her foot and face. As soon as the bleeding stopped you could see the fang marks. It also swelled up the size of a cantaloupe.
Could it have been a mesquite branch?
