How does everyone feel about east texas hunting? Ive always heard the deer are bigger and better in east texas vs west...Also heard the deer are more skiddish. (sp) I was just wanting some east texas pros and cons and to see what other peoples experiences have been good or bad. So lets hear it!

There are some big deer killed in east Tx every year. Generally leases are cheaper here than other areas of the state too. Depending on where you hunt, it can be thick so visibility can be limited. Also, deer have more to eat in the woods so they don't always hit feeders as hard as they do in other areas. East Tx also has a bad reputation for poachers, but it's probably not any worse than any where else. As far as the deer being skiddish, it probably depends a lot on the time of year and hunting pressure just like anywhere else.

Seems to me that most leases around here that are well managed and successful are locked up pretty tight with waiting lists for members. Either that or the prices seem to begin to go up. IMHHO

That's true. Our prices haven't went up in a long time, but we do have a list of about 10 people waiting to get on our lease, and nobody has gotten off in about 3 years.

There's big deer in ETX but you have to hunt hard to be successful. You can't just lean a stand up against a tree and put a feeder in a field and expect to kill a mature buck. (i know people get lucky though) Good stand placement and putting some hours in the stand will pay off.

It's a whole different ball game than central/west TX hunting-primarily because deer are not as easily seen because of the cover. Some people love it and some people don't.If seeing groups of deer almost every outing is important to you then east TX is probably not the place for you. The quality of the deer is very dependent on how the place has been hunted previously and how the surrounding lands are hunted(just like anywhere else). The deer numbers and quality have improved overall in most places over the past 10-20 years.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

And often if you getta see a buck you got maybe seconds to decide and the rest of the season to live with that decision!

have seen some real nice bucks shot in E Tx. But it is very hard hunting, low deer density. As soon as I could pay for my own lease i went west. Better luck and bigger deer, still a lot of good memories about hunting out there though. Also a bad reputation for poachers and thiefs, we had plenty experience with that

I know lots of people who live in east Texas and drive out west to hunt. I can't say that I know or have ever heard of anyone driving from west Texas to east Texas to hunt...

That is a great statement. I drive from Tyler to Mills county to hunt. I refuse to hunt here, where 20 people on 400 acres is the norm. Sure it would be alot cheaper, but I prefer more land and less people. Oh yeah and I like seeing deer, quail, turkeys, hogs,, every time I hunt. Helps pass the time.

I have hunted East Texas all my life and have had some great times hunting here. I finally got an opportunity to get on a good lease in West Texas and jumped on it though. I still keep the one here in East Texas just for the days that I don't get to make the 7 hour drive to the other lease. I can see more deer out West in one hunt than I would normally see here in East Texas for the entire season. There are some big boys around here though if you have to patience to wait them out. One of the main reasons I wanted to hunt out West is for my son. He was getting bored with hunting here all season and never seeing a buck he could shoot. Now, he can shoot any buck he wants to and he loves it.

I have lived and hunted in both places. East Texas has some nice deer, but I would take West Texas for size. Also a lot easier to hunt in West Texas where it is a lot more open. I live and hunt in East Texas now and love it, but it took some getting used to and some learning. It's not as easy as setting up a blind and a feeder.

it sucks.
there will be a few good deer shot up there every year, but all in all, it's over hunted and poorly managed. Both by TP&W, and by the vast majority of landowners
for the people that tell me I'm crazy....I know....I know.... a guy you work with has a friend, who knows a guy who's neighbor's cousin's father's business partner shot a 160 last year....
there is a reason the deer are skittish up there. 80% of them probably have permanent eye damage from getting hit with 3 million candle power on a weekly basis.

A 158" in Cherokee county but that is the biggest deer this guy has gotten in nearly 60 years of VERY dedicated hunting. 125-130 gets a guy pretty excited.

I think the thick cover scares a lot of hunters away. It is not as easy to see the deer from far away, you need to plan out your stands, plots, and feeders much better. Scouting is very important. I am a native to East Texas, so I'm biased when I say I'd rather hunt here and not see any giants then be out west where the wind never stops blowing.

Where does south Texas rank in this discussion? I have had the opportunity to Hunt around Freer. I enjoyed that!
