from what i can gather around here in SA, the average price of a shoulder mount from a reputable taxidermist has gone up over the last 4 years.

we used to get a good whitetail or axis shoulder mount for $425-$450, now, it seems like the price is up in the $550 range.

for a good, quality mount (not a $200 job done in someones garage in their off time) from a quality taxi, what is the goin rate in other areas of the state?

It is about the same for me or a little more for the guy I use in Houston than the guy I use in SA. Axis are higher than whitetail for me and mule deer even higher than both whitetail and axis. There is definetly a difference in the work of a mount that I pay more for these days than years ago. I have seen some great looking mounts still in the $450 dollar range but have not tried on of those guys.

Increased fuel prices have been the number one driving force for increased prices, both from shipping of hides to the tannery and back and shipping of materials to the shop as well as the cost of manikins as the price for foam has also gone up in price like crazy the last five years. Add to that, that in tough economic times, the cheap guys stop bringing in deer heads to the cheap taxidermists and in general, the only taxi's left are the quality ones. just my opinion.

I agree oil/fuel prices are driving the cost of everything up due to shipping costs of raw materials and finished goods. Not to mention the foam is made from oil or natural gas bi-products as well. If you have a quality animal, spend the extra money for a quality mount. I would rather spend a little extra and get a great mount than spend one penny for a crappy mount. If you cant afford a good shoulder mount do a European mount instead. They aren't for everyone but would be way better than wasting good money on a poor mount.

i don't have a problem with paying for a good shoulder mount, just wanted to get a feel for prices in other areas of the state.

imo more than one or two euro's and you have too much

I do them for $450 here in Nacogdoches, and I do them part time.

I just got my mount back from Ram Country Taxidermy in Burleson. I am very pleased with it and it cost me $395.

I started using a guy outside of Muleshoe who farms full time and his taxi work is becoming full time as well. He does awesome work and if I remember correctly, he just went up to $375 for a WT shoulder mount.

Looks very good curbow. I am in the NE Tx area. Most mounts run from $350 to the $500 range. I am right in between. I do agree, I would rather get an euro done than get a poor mount. Why waste your money. Do some research on the taxi you do to, make sure you like their work.

The guy I use was getting 250 for shoulder mounts, and does fine work. Ive used 4 other taxis in the past, charging anywhere from 200 to 475...

The guy I am using has raised his prices WAY up. The whitetail I had done was about $600 with tax and he is at $595 plus tax for the Rams, Fallow, Sika, Blackbuck, etc. It's costing me more in Taxi work than the animal I shoot! Any good SA taxi's?
