Or help talk me into it! cheers

I'm pretty much sold on the thing. $730 to my door, but I'm really stretching my budget to get it.

Main thing was weight and balance. I held the vtr 22" and many others at bass pro shop and I felt that the vtr had the right weight, balance and length for a walking around bush rifle.

I was sold on the 700 in .270, but after shooting my friend's .270 I found the muzzle jump excessive and the 24" length a little much for a walking around rifle.

I know the 700 Varmint stock is not the best, but it felt better with the short barrel than the SPS synthetic (basic SPS not tactical if that makes a difference) or the ADL synthetic. The one on the A-TACS has dual front swivel mounts already on it.

It's not a 1000y sniper rifle. I do expect sub MOA 100y groups once I find the right ammo. I expect distinct groups of some kind out to 350y and somewhat worse groups at 400 yards. I would expect to at least be able to hit a gong at 500y with some consistency.

I would use it for range shooting a lot (once or twice a week), probably get a quick release bipod and 6-18 or so heavy scope for range days, that should soften up the already manageable recoil. However the primary mission of the rifle is a hunting rifle that should be able to take coyotes through elk and occasionally explode a prairie-dog. For hunting it will be fitted with a low-mounted lightweight 2.5 x 8 scope and a sling, that's it, unless I'm only sitting in a stand. I want this rifle to be very good at one thing shooting medium sized running critters at under 150y while I'm standing and not bracing the weapon. I am looking for good weight and target re-acquisition.

The muzzle break should help in keeping the muzzle down and that's all I really expect out of it other than a little more bang. A lot of people don't like the look of the triangular barrel, but I don't mind it.

Look at the Savage 10 Precision Carbine in .308. It comes with the accu-trigger and accu-stock.

That's a nice looking rifle, but the one with the muzzle brake is to heavy and will be way louder than the vtr (which is not using much of a brake). And the 20" no brake model will probably be a great shooter but have the muzzle jump to deal with. Of course it also has a free floated barrel and nice stalk to make up for it. I was looking at the law enforcement series.

Read the review on sniper central on the VTR. Basically what they said was the triangular barrel was a big gimmick. The stock is shotty at best and the barrel is not fully floated. They shoot no better than the varmints and are much more expensive. Finally the report on the muzzle brake was it did nothing except make noise and didn't appear to change recoil/muzzle flip.

A much better option for $200 less is the SPS-tactical. It comes with a houge stock which isn't great but is pillar bedded and should shave at least 1/4" or more off groups.

The VTR is still quite heavy so shooting off hand is no easy task but the Sps-tactical has a shorter barrel so while it is a full bull barrel weight wise should be similar.

After getting this far into the post I went back and read and am now quite confused with what you are looking for.

you mention a brush rifle that you can shoot off hand, you want something like a remington model 7 that comes with a light stock and sporter weight barrel. Something in the 5 pound range once you throw a scope and ammo bipod and sling your vtr will be in the 10-12 pound range.

Maybe you are a better shot than me or an ex miltary sniper but how many times are you planning to shoot at game animals off hand. You said multiple range trips are you planning to stand at the range and practice at 100 yards. I know all about trying to make one firearm do it all and I went with an AR-10. But its a heavy rifle however I know I could take a shot standing but that is the last thing on my mind. I'd either get prone or find a car/tree or shooting sticks to take that shot.

So the moral of the story, based on touching the VTR and reading up on sniper central, I'd highly suggest the sps-tacitcal instead as it is cheaper and dare I say an overall better rifle. You'd still have enough money to get it flued if you really thought it was too heavy.

However I'd revaluate what you really want to do with this rifle. Is it a range gun that is a heck of a hunting rilfe that you don't tote around or are you just looking for a very accurate rifle that is as light as possible. The benefit that I've learned is sporter weight rifles can be just as if not more accurate but they all have different purposed.

Take this with a grain of salt but I've read up on these rifles over the years.

If you want tactical go tactical but go for the best. If you want carry around go with a mountain rifle. If you want the best of both sps-tactical.

Also I didn't notice much if any muzzle jump from the sps-tactical and to be honest it was accurate enough I wasn't real worried about follow up shots.

Or you can get a Sako A7 in 270 or 30-06 for $599? Much better gun IMO than the VTR.

I'll look at the other options like the LTR (expensive at $900+) and SPS tactical and the Sako.

I've shot a few of the triangle barrel models, IMO except for the noise they're no better or worse shooting than a round barrel model.

If you want an inexpensive short barrel rifle I'd buy;
Ltd edition Remington 700 SPS Lt Tactical (LTT) .308 - 1: 10 twist 20" LTR style fluted barrel.
Comes in the synthetic varmint stock.
Remington # 85471
You can find them for $650 ~ $700.
Because its a SPS varmint stock I believe it's eligible for the $75 mail in rebate.

Later on drop it in a better stock.

Or just buy the LTR or SPS T.

X2, plus in the future you can change the barrel without much hassle. If it has to be Remington I'g go with the SPS Tactical.

Agree. But, would add the Remington 200P LTR to the mix, if budget allows. The LTR handled way better to me than the SPS Tactical and has a much better stock and is free floated. I would have gotten it but, it was out of my price range and got the Savage 10 PC instead.

I just have NO stomach for a triangled rifle barrel.

start out with a Stevens or a Savage and build from there, save money and get a better shooter.

Looks like I'm going to pull the trigger on this soon, but not the A-TACS cammo one. I found one with the 22" R5 1 in 11.25 VTR barrel (with the brake too) in green. I can't say no one warned me if I don't like it.

I have a 700 VTR .308 with a tan/black stock that I love, it shoots 3/4 MOA or less out of the box. Mine shoots the 150 gr SST Hornady ammo very well, can't be more pleased with it!

I finally picked up the 700 vtr in 308 with the 5r riffling and I'm breaking in the barrel. It shoots very nice (better than me). I'm happy to report that it's not the loudest gun on the range smile in fact it's no louder than my buddies 700 270 24" barrel; and with significantly less recoil and muzzle flip. The barrel cleans up quick too.

im a stickler for savage rifles, but a buddy of mine has a vtr in 223 and it is a very comfortable gun to shoot very accurate as well.
