Chee-Wah-Wahs would make good hog dogs... I've been training our Yorkie/Poodle cross for almost a year and I think he is good to go on piglets. up

LOL My dog does not have to worry about getting its guts ripped out by a duck! lol

Snakes, cold-cold water, exhaustion, stray pellets from co-hunters, the list goes on... There are risks involved everytime we are in the field, that's what I was saying, lol. No killer ducks.

Dogs & trot-lines don't go together at all... Worst time duckin ever, maybe the worst time hunting even.

not a fan of the knife.. only had to put one big bad boar down one time. most the time just flip them and hog tie them and sale them. as far as the dogs go they love it! i have been around bird dogs, cow dogs, duck dogs, some coon dogs and hog dogs and they all love their jobs... have had dogs injured in all of those types of hunting too! the hog dogs i have been around are very well taken care of and are not the mean blood thirsty dogs like some people think. they are good with kids & lazy hang around the house dogs but are all business once your in the woods. they are pretty much cow dogs just trained to find pigs not cows.the discovery channels show makes all dog hunters or hunters period look like we are idiots. to much acting for me

The problem with that statement is we are not posting the slaughter house videos on UTube and calling it sport.

Hogs are shot and left lay by the hundreds by shooters in helicopters. Every day.

As far as asking about hog dogs interaction with people, mine will all crawl up in your lap if you let them. They love being with people, but they love getting it on with a hog as well and I would have to say more so, because they all would bail out of my lap to get a hog.

As far as multiple knife thrusts, most pump the knife a time or 2 for greater tissue damage and faster belled out. They developed the wide mechanical broadheads for the very same reason. The same for expanding bullets. Tissue damage to speed up death.

As far as dogs not being efficient at hog removal, I talked to a friend today that took 8 one night and 10 the next morning. Where hogs are thick, taking several in a hunt is not uncommon. In areas where they are present in lesser numbers, 1 or 2 would be a good night.

Shoot it with a rifle from long distance if it makes you feel better. Shoot it with a bow from a closer distance if that is your game ( I do both ). Shoot 'em from medium range with a pistol. ( done that too ). Or knife it, they are all dead. Nothing is changed but personal feelings.

Some say knifers are blood thirsty, it could also be said if you cant knife one you are squeamish. Blowing a does head up at 75 yards with a rifle while it feeds unsuspecting under a feeder is far less sporting that dogging and knifing.

The world would be a much better place if everyone just said " man that's cool " when discussing another preferred hunting techniques. A lot more boring, but a hell of a lot more peaceful.

Dogs to me is the most sport hunting there is. Rather its for birds, coons, rabbits or hogs..etc. I love runnin dogs off horseback. Its not just about killin. Its mainly about the dogs. People have been hunting with dogs for hundreds of years. Alot people will say sitting in a stand looking at a corn pile is no sport at all. I disagree as you guys do but its out there....Hell alot of ranchers crack up about these high dollar big city hunters.

About the killing with a knife. I think killing a hog with a knife if done right is one of the fastest ways to kill em. How is it worse then gut shooting something and running off to die. Or walking up to a deer that still kickin. Just stupid...

On the Hogs gone wild..That show is a joke and in no way shows how dogs really work. I know of the L3 guy and herd that alot those scenes were not even on the ranch. I herd they caught 20 or so pigs and cut it up to just one or two hunts per show. The show already had all the spots lined up for them to hunt. Hell they even hunted one the ranches I run. Dogs do have there place in helping keep the pop in control.

Also on the videos online. Yeah there are alot of bad videos out there on the net but in all aspects of hunting. Just alot of bad apples out there that is not giving hunting in general a bad name.

I also think there are alot of anti hunters who read these forums looking for fuel to the fire but we has hunters also need to be careful what we right on forums. Hopefully generations to come will be able to enjoy the outdoors as we do...........Just my thoughts

I keep seeing the reading of anti hunters and PETA on this thread, it isn't them you need to worry about

My sons and I hunt them. Grayson county is over run with them. If our freezers are full we always try and find someone to give them to. Alot of families around Gunter are proud to get them. We very seldom let one lay. Although the land owners don't care, they just want them dead.

I thought it was just killing until my buddy's pasture was torn up in a couple of nights. Hard to raise cattle when the pasture is torn up. After that started killing as many hogs as we could. Never can get rid of them entirely, but we try to save as much pasture as possible.

We also butcher the young sows to mix with our deer.
