With all the hype over the Remington 700, it's got me wondering if any other rifles have done the same besides the 700........ stir

I don't know what to believe but personally I have owned a lot of 700's in the past and have never had a single issue to where the gun did not preform like it was supposed to.

But I do got to be honest, during deer season everytime I did go to let the safety off before I fired it did cross my mind. Of course, nothing happend other than an animal falling over dead.

So.....

Yup, Hugly SXS shotgun and a Herters J9 Mauser 98 action. In the case o the Huglu it was sand in the action cleaned good no further peoblems (last time I hunted Geese with it in Peanut fields though). The J9 was after a friend "worked on the trigger", quickly it was replaced with timney still have both guns no further issues. Never had a Remmy go off unexpectantly but saw it at the range one time.

I have had a few guns that have had mishaps. One was a sporterized 7x57 that either the sear was worn or adjusted wrong and when the safety was taken off sent one flying out into the atmosphere (a very scarry event) I replaced trigger with a Bold and problem was fixed.

Second was a CZ 550 in 7X57 that when I engaged the forward set trigger and then took safety off it also fired. I increased poundage and never had same result.

Third was a Winchester 70 that did not accidently fire but delayed ignition, lost me a nice buck. Of course it was a cold day and spring on firing pin was gummed up. Cleaning of the whole bolt assembly didi the trick.

I traded into a well used Winchester model 12 a few years back that fires upon safety release.
The PO told me about the safety issue.
It never goes into the field.
One of these days I`m gonna change out the trigger assembly.
Anybody got one ?

I used to hunt with a Dallas Sheriff that had some sort of 12 ga SxS that sometimes fired on closing it. He carried it open so I made sure he was always in front of me!

I knew a guy growing up that closed the action of a side by side 16Ga and blew a console TV to hell. His Dad jumped up ready to beat him but when they took the gun outside it happened again.

I have had it happen with an H&R 949 .22 LR pistol and heard of it happening with a converted Mauser 98.

I had a Winchester M70 fire upon releasing the safety once, just last Summer.

Winchester model 70 (pre 64) that went off when I released the safety while hunting. Even though thoroughly cleaned (before and after the incident), it will continue to fire about 1 out of 4 times when the safety is released. Parked it in the safe years ago, waiting to be repaired. I have in the past and still own numerous Remingtons, never had a problem.

Clearly the trigger mechanism must be dirty, improperly lubricated or adjusted by someone ignorant of the proper procedures - nothing else is possible.

Side question - was it cold when you were hunting? It's important...

Sorry, no errors "by someone ignorant of the proper procedures..." Trigger mechanism has never been adjusted (since 1960's) and firearm has always been properly cleaned and lubricated. A well respected gunsmith inspected it and determined that the safety mechanism was defective and needed to be replaced.
The initial discharge happened when temperatures were in the upper 30's to low 40's.....but was able to duplicate the problem at any temperature.

It can happen-rare but possible. Read the article by Remington and also the article by the Gun Blast guy.

well...does it count if you accidentally fired one....done that!!!http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/images/icons/default/blush.gif
My father had an old Winchester Model 97(I think); 12 gauge that had fired once or twice unexpectedly...It was shunned after that and I have no idea what ever happened to it.
