I'm going to buy a new rifle. I want one short and light. I know I want either a Ruger Compact, or a Remmy Model 7.
Anyone got any advise on either? Thanks.

I'm kinda leaning towards the Ruger.
But those model 7 CDL's really do look sweet.

Remington model 7: 13 1/2" length of pull and 20" barrel.

REM Mod 7, esp if you can find an older one.
Love my Modd 7 in .308 Stainless/Synthetic, circa 1998. No "Warning read the owners Manual" or J-Lock!
Good luck trying to find one for sale!

I've had both, liked both - still own the model 7. 12.5" LOP on the compact just didn't work for me.

Good luck trying to find one for sale! I ended up selling my Model 7 stainless 308 when I bought my Ruger Compact stainless 308.

Between the Rem Model 7 (20" barrel) and the Ruger Compact (16-1/2"), I'll take the Rem with the little extra barrel length....., the Ruger Compact barrel is too short for my liking.
I know it's not one you mentioned but you ought to give the Ruger Ultralight (20" barrel) a look, that'd be my first pick.
I've had a couple of each...., the only one I no longer have is the Ruger Compact.

Ruger compact. I like the laminate Rugers more then the walnut.

Are you dead set on a bolt-action repeater? If not, how about a Ruger #1-A Light Sporter single shot (my favorite)....., you'll get a rifle with a 22" barrel that has an overall length only 3" longer than the stubby Ruger Compact.

I've had a Model 7 in .223 for years and with the exception of my Rossi lever action in .357 mag, have killed more animals with it than any of the big guns.
But, that short Ruger looks like it has possibilities.

Those number one's are pretty nice. But I'm kinda set on what I want and I've narrowed it down to the compact and the model 7. I'm kinda digging the Model 7 in a 7mm-8 caliber. I also am looking at a Ruger Compact in .308, I've also found a Ruger Ultra lite in 243 that is a sweet little thing as well. I'm going to think on it for a month or so. What I am wanting to use it for is really a kinda back packing type of gun. Something I can carry all day just for the hell of it when I go walking around. I'm sure it will spend some time riding on the console of the truck also.

my mod 7 ss in 260 is as good a gun there is. for walking around, stalking, etc, works great. Put a stalk on a 9 point last year, had to sneak in about 300 yards to get an off hand 150 yard shot, nice light rifle made it an easy DRT.
As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind...Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks--Thomas Jefferson

I dont need another hunting rifle, dont shoot half the ones i got, but I just feel the urge for a Remington model 7 in 7mm-08. I got a 7-08 already and love the caliber.
